Well, having decided to look at this kayaking m'larky but being tight and unwilling to fork out vast sums for the pleasure...
I decided to build me own boat....
this could be interesting

1st stop was finding a design I liked...I dislike some of the designs which look (to my eyes) like "Billy's 1st Kayak"
a design found, by Selway Fisher, the plans were purchased and an adventure embarked upon !

The basic premise of the design is sheets of 4mm plywood, cut to shape then stuck together using epoxy resin....
what could go wrong eh ?

Marking out the sheets for cutting

cutting the 1st of the hull shapes
at this point I'm still very unsure that it'll ever float...let alone float with me in it !
Time will tell
Yambo likes this.

When the hull was finished....the boat was turned over....I took this opportunity to make some foam lined cradles to protect the hull.

1st job was painting out the inside of the cockpit as this will get the most wear and tear....

the two studs visible in this picture are the mountings for the seat... I have set two nuts down into the lower hull then epoxied them in to give me some captive mountings

test fit of the deck hatches...

at this point they look stuck up from the deck and spoil the lines of the boat....I wasn't sure I'd made the right choice in fitting them.....

A last minute decision was to fit some rubbing strips where the hull and deck join, this is the most likely area to sustain damage and I used some Oak strip we had in stock...

this really should have been done before painting, but it was too late by then....

Whoo Hoo....the 1st coat of undercoat.....

I decided to undercoat the whole upper deck, then fill any bits that showed...then re-apply under coat...then fill any marks etc etc, till a smooth finish was achieved

So freshly painted it looks shiny !

Having finally finished the painting side of things, next is outfitting....
If I hadn't insisted on mimicing production boats..this would have been it..but in my case, I still had a fair bit to do....

    fitting the lifting toggles

then the deck line fittings.... these are marked out, drilled and then fitted with sealant using stainless fitting thru the hull

Finally the deck lines themselves.... these are to assist you holding onto/getting back into the boat when you fall out of it...

Deck lines in place.....rear hatch rim fitted and the deck elastics in progress....

The front end is more of the same.....
