I suspect this thread will descend into a pit of despair fairly quickly, but I have been reading the TRC Rollcall thread and I must admit I am a little disappointed in the general undertone of some of the replies... >:(

DodgetheRog has obviously spent a lot of time putting together those words and when he read it out at the Memorial Meet, he was met with acknowledging nods, smiles, titters and a round of applause at the end. He has captures a lot of what the spirit of TRC is all about.

The Memorial Meet is NOT a cliquey affair, not in the slightest, I am not the best person at walking up to people I don't know, but over the past three years when it have been a weekend affair, I have had a thoroughly good time, chatting to, listening to and meeting new people.

As far as I am aware none of the events, whether it be the various Winter Balls, the summer camping trips, the tours organised by Adam, Phy5ic5, Flash and others, the Treasure Hunts, the numerous drinks all around the country are invite only, it is generally a case that the same people who like mixing and meeting up tend to attend.

It beggars belief that some people think that there are is a clique, if knowing people for perhaps up to 10, 11, 12 years makes it cliquey, counting on these weird internet people as friends, for good and bad times, trading compliments, insults, help, a listening ear, a sounding board or just someone to go for a pint on a Thursday afternoon between meeting one mate for lunch and meeting someone for dinner on an evening in a small town miles from home, then I am pleased that I am in a clique, the clique known as TRC.

I have lost count of the people who will go out of their way to help others, I am one of those people who has benefited from it but I also hope that I have put more back into the system than I have taken out.

I am not naive enough to think that people don't get together and have camping holidays, tours, holidays, appear on TV, get married, have children, whatever with people from the forum, but it isn't a case of being exclusive it is just friends being friends.

After typing all of this, I can't be arsed with the potential fall out, the hand wringing, people saying it is just some soft lad from up North attention seeking, so to the blog it will head and most likely disappear without a trace.

::)

ps I have had lunch with two TRCers in the last few weeks and didn't invite anyone else, I am surely going to hell for forming my own clique!

I have no intention of parting with my 5JJ, I think the only reason I would is if I couldn't ride a sports bike and I went Panzer, if there was a GSA in the garage, the R1 would cry :D

1 Kilo Brown onions
Brown Sugar
Cider Vinegar
10-12 Black peppercorns, crushed

Peel and chop up onions as roughly as you like

Chop chilli up finely removing all seeds.

Sauté the onions and chilli in a bit of olive oil and butter, and I mean slowly, I tend to cover the pan with a lid and put it on a very low heat, stirring every few minutes and ensuring that none of it catches on the bottom of the pan.

The deeper and darker colour you can get in the onions without burning, the sweeter the end product. This normally takes an hour to achieve, so be patient.

Once you have a sticky brown, sweet tasting gloopy mess in the bottom of the pan, bear in mind, that the ingredients will typically reduce down to around 1 pint in volume, add around 150 grams of soft brown sugar, the crushed peppercorns and 100 mils of the vinegar.

Stir everything together, and leave to simmer until you have evaporated all of the liquid.

Pour into a sterilised jar and leave to mature for a few weeks if you can resist it long enough!

Ingredients
150g long fresh red chillies, each deseeded and cut into about 4 pieces.
150g red peppers, cored, deseeded and cut into rough chunks
1kg jam sugar
600ml cider vinegar
6 x 250ml sealable jars, with vinegar-proof lid, such as Kilner jar or re-usable pickle jar
Serving Size : Makes approx. 1.5 Litres

METHOD

1. Sterilize your jars and leave to cool.
2. Put the cut-up chillies into a food processor and pulse until they are finely chopped. Add the chunks of red pepper and pulse again until you have a vibrantly red-flecked processor bowl.
3. Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar in a wide, medium-sized pan over a low heat without stirring.
4. Scrape the chilli-pepper mixture out of the bowl and add to the pan. Bring the pan to the boil, then leave it at a rollicking boil for 10 minutes.
5. Take the pan off the heat and allow it cool. The liquid will become more syrupy, then from syrup to viscous and from viscous to jelly-like as it cools.
6. After about 40 minutes, or once the red flecks are more or less evenly dispersed in the jelly (as the liquid firms up, the hints of chilli and pepper start being suspended in it rather than floating on it), ladle into your jars. If you want to stir gently at this stage, it will do no harm. Then seal tightly.

10 minutes is a little on the light side, get a thermometer and get the molten lava boiling up to 110 degrees, that way it will set and you won't end up with sweet chilli sauce.
110 degrees is around the right temp for the set point assuming you follow the above. :)

OK guys,

Cards on the table time, I want to accelerate the weight-loss / fitness program, but have seemingly hit a wall :(

Over 2008, I lost a total of around 10 kilos naturally, minor changes to diet, ie less junk, switching to chicken kebabs instead on doners, however I have hit a bit of a plateau. :(

At my disposal I have a pushbike, that I enjoy riding, but seem to find excuses not to
I can swim up to 5 times a week for free, time permitting (Monday and Fridays after 8, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays after teaching)
Kids live 1.5 miles away, and to be fair I have tried and mainly succeeded to cycle there at least twice a week

Diet wise, I get up late, grab a bacon sarnie on the way into work, baked spud / sarnie from shop next to office for lunch, late supper (past 9pm) I may or may not also consume a reasonable amount of beer during the week as well ;)

Body clock is pretty fucked, 1am isn't unheard of to goto sleep, get up around 8 - 8.30am for work.

I have a goal, in 12 weeks a very good friend is getting married, and I'd like a new wardrobe for the event, suited booted, looking and feeling great.

At 6'2" and 109kilos currently, I know that I will, according to the BMI chart below, always be in the yellow, but with broad shoulders (and big bones ;)), I am never going to get to 'ideal' bmi in any case.

So 2lbs, 1kg per week, not infeasible, but I lack one thing, the gumption, will power, self control to actually stick to a fitness regime / diet / both for any period of time :(

So what tips do people have for:

Fitting in exercise into the day to day schedule - I know this means early mornings, but I wake up knackered (OSA doesn't help)
Fitting in a healthy diet around home - work - work - pub - home
Staying motivated

I expect an arse kicking, but I would hope to get some practical tips as well :)

Well you've read the thread, now the next exciting episode is the blog.

Day 1

The week started a shade under 109kg, no breakfast (bad boy), slice of chocolate cake for 11's, even worse, but I was determined.

I downloaded Sports tracker for the phone, and set off on a walkabout around Newcastle city centre, a 30 minute brisk walk around town covering 2 miles with a small rest at the barbers and back for a salad box, small amount of coleslaw, no mayo on the chicken.

Got back tonight, handful of salad, some feta, black pepper and splash of olive oil, followed by a small bowl of frosties and semi skimmed milk.

4.5 miles on the bike, average speed 8.4mph, max speed 23.8mph and about 30 mins later.

Will try and extend the walk tomorrow and have some breakfast before I set off for work.

Day 2

I managed breakfast, I managed a 3.3mile 41 minute walk over 'undulating terrain*' and salad again for lunch. onna use the pushbike to go to diving tonight and hopefully, will power permitting, avoid beer nd perhaps have a glass of red wine instead.

Can you still getdone for drunk in charge of a push bike??

* City centre, down the quayside, across the Millenium bridge, back over the Swing Bridge, up to the train station, across town and back to the Theatre.

Day 3

Well yesterdays plans went to shite, after a very healthy grilled chicken, bacon and couscous salad, I drove to diving, only pottered in the pool, so no real gain there and went to the pub :(

A couple of large glses of Merlot later, I m craving food, and sin of sins had two bacon and cheese toasties.

This morning, feeling jaded, dn't bother with breakfast but went for a 3.7 mile walk just now, covering the distance in 54 minutes, a little of pace, but still a healthy glow afterwards.

Will defo use the bike tonight to pound out as many miles as I can before sitting down to watch the football.

RE - Free Energy Saving Light bulbs

I am writing to thank you on behalf of myself, your customers and the Royal Mail for sending me some free energy saving light bulbs via post last week.

I was surprised to receive the little red card from the postman, to say that I have a parcel to collect.

I have now visited the local sorting office three times in order to collect my free energy saving light bulbs, by car. The first attempt was aborted due to the sheer number of your customers queueing for their free gifts.

I tried later that day, again the attempt was aborted as the same number of people were queueing, who would have thought that so many people were your customers.

Finally this morning, I managed to get to the front of the queue to collect my parcel to be advised that the Royal Mail sorting staff love your company at the moment, as they haven't stopped sorting light bulbs, arranging re-deliveries, dealing with customers. Sadly, 96 hours was not sufficient time for them to work their way through the mountain, so I have to return at a later date.

I would like to enquire as to whether any thought had been given to the wasted fuel, time, energy, reduced customer service, and the disappointment that the gift wasn't something rather more useful, before this campaign had started.

Yours, still waiting in anticipation of the receipt of the bulbs, wondering if these wondrous energy saving bulbs will save sufficient energy to offset the increased carbon foot print created in the delivery process to make it all worthwhile...
