Cashing A Cheque - How Much Does It Cost?

I've got a cheque for £1000 and might try and cash it in at The Money Shop or Cash Converters etc rather than wait for it to clear.

The sites make no mention of what the fee actually is, so does anyone know?

And will they cash a cheque over £750?

Put it in the bank and let it clear.

Don't know what those sort of places take in commission but it will be a lot.

Depends if it'll be more than I could be paying out in taxi's for transport for a week compared to buying a bike!

Or should I just tell the hire company bollocks and keep their bike until the cheque clears?

FWI banks have been told to make sure transfers and cheques clear quicker than the 'Oh that will take three days to show on your account@
I put a cheque in Yesterday and it showed on my account today.
I would put it in the bank (maybe ask them for a temp overdraft) it will not cost as much as cashing it via a cheque clearing place.

Pete (wondering if cheque clearing is run by the same people who run the 419 scams)

That doesn't mean oit's cleared. I deposited a cheque 6 weeks ago and was told it took SIX days to clear now as they do so few it takes longer.

The Money Shop asked for £70 approx to cash a £1000 cheque instantly... but there's an offer in the Yellow Pages where I can cash it for 'only' 2.99%

I'm not sure which of the two are the biggest robbing wankers.

I don't think I've seen a cheque in about 5 years! I was a bit surprised that they're still getting away with stupid clearance times.

I'm a bit worried that a skag-head shop can cash a cheque instantly whilst a major bank can't, as well.

They can't - that's one of the reasons why they charge you such a percentage, it's to cover them from the inevitable scams.

I know someone who used to do cheque cashing, he stopped because so many people were trying to scam him that it just wasn't worth the aggro anymore.
