A somewhat timely thread resurrection, I relented yesterday and allowed the missus to get what is, with the exception of a family goldfish when I was a kid, my first ever pet. I've never been a dog person and know next to nothing about them so am still a bit in shock, especially since it's not house trained.

It's the owners that need training rather than the dog (might sound silly, but it's sort of true).

Nice dag. Live and learn though - get one with a head next time

+1. The more effort and trainning you put in when they are young the better. (don't over do walks etc though).
I trainned my dog to a voice command, whistle and hand signal for all the common type commands. Was well worth the effort IMO.

This was Arthur - a good old staffy who we rescued and gave a nice life for his final few years.

Definitely kinda, in as much as I've no clue, but even I know it's the dog who needs training to go outside. She's a year old and came from a young family of five kids whose new landlord wouldn't take 2 dogs (and 4 cats); the kids were weeing on the carpet, I can't blame the dog if she was doing the same, especially since she had a cat flap. Fortunately the wife's sister lives nearby and has a well trained boy example who can help us out. The chief problem is ours doesn't bark so we don't know if she wants in or out, the plan is to train her using the other dog who does understand how to make us open the back door.

Another trained dog is good to have around. Worth borrowing it for a few nights once a week. Lots of well done and cuddles/treats when he/ she does it outside. Blank or dirty looks and deep voice saying bad when he/she does it indoors. When you get up in the morning before you put the kettle on let the dog out. Its worth going out with it and saying good boy/girl when it does the deed. I would say its too old for the puppy pad training as it should be grown out of that by now apart from the odd accident. Dont get fucked off (hard to do) after a few weeks of pissing outside it does it indoors, Just clean up and blank the dog. The more you put in the more you get out.

I think she wants to go outside but has no understanding of how to let us know, since she's always had the cat flap. We're plagued by foxes here (local idiots feed them) so a cat flap isn't an option. I also think she was fed from the plate by the kids and irregularly walked, so doesn't understand when she's expected to go. We're trying to feed her just once a day when we eat in the evening so she doesn't beg, and then take her for a decent walk. We could borrow the boy dog, but he's close enough that we can take her to him most days.

you've helped me enough over the years-pm me about anything. What breed is it?!

Yes, dog who knows what it's doing is great & otherwise it's a matter of routine & reward. Start again like it's a puppy so out to the same place as soon as she wakes, after eating, & after play session. If you get your alphas in NOW you'll be set for life. Google that or see my posts passim about Dog Listener or KDR1's on anything behavioural. There's shed loads of good advice from him back on VD as well. Routines & everyone not anthroing it-it's a dog, not a small person. As ever, if you see it all from her perspective & make sure you're all in charge, never her, then all be well. Check with your vet re foxes-some of the flea killer meds cover fox mange & it would be highly prudent to have some resistance against that.
