"worthy" films - worth the effort?

TBH I'm only interested in potentially worthy new films, not older ones where others have made your mind up already about their worthiness. I'm finding ...

I'm finding those named so fair as representational reasonably disappointing, I have to say.

I'm surprised at you to be honest, here's your opportunity to tell me something I don't know and that I might be interested in and you use the opportunity to produce a list of ancient films of questionable worth. And your reasons for that selection seem to be based upon your hatred of the notion of the american dream rather than any sense of them being 'improving'? Fail.

Anyone lucid seen any recent films worth seeing?

I've an entire bookcase of 'worthy & improving' literature. No it's not porn-whole load of the classics in rather nice hardback leather bound covers. They're in the loft now. I've not read any of them because there's so much else to do & they will always be there.

This bookcase is now full of, let us say, quality modern literature. B formats, the upmarket imprints & all of them were the talk of the chattering classes in their day. I've had them mostly as freebies or damaged & I call this bookcase my 'rainy day' stash. Some of them I've read, I could summarise them all in a sentance. I go there when I'm in that sort of mood for a stretch; when I'm tired of my not-so-secret pash for junky crime books.

And so it must be for films? I don't like 'worthy'. I'm a media whore-I use it for what I want or where I want to be. Depends-do I want my socks blown off/ reduced to a sobbing wreck/ angry & furious/ loved up/ jaw dropped at the exquistness of it and/or left thinking about it all for days?

Worthy is what Aunts foster on you as a present or of course a school prize. What is it worth? If it can provoke or engender some or hey, ALL of that list I made above, then that is solid gold.

A recc? Tricky now I'm on the spot. I'll think about that list & try & match as well as the 24 carat diamond encrusted awards.

Ooh, crap like Goddard. I think I made my opinion on his work known recently.

Judging from some of the comments on IMDB for some films I rather like, I get the impression 'worthy' is something of a nebulous term and that any film that doesn't spoon-feed its audience, that assumes a certain level of intelligence (being able to breathe without dribbling, spell single syllable words, construct a simple coherent sentence) is pretentious crap.

From what I can tell, just being in a different language instantly makes a film superior and only for pseudo intellectuals for some people irrespective of how silly the film may actually be.

I haven't (heard of it) but I'll make an effort to watch if you recc. it. I'm keen to watch new stuff that's though provoking, older stuff that's been trawled over and firmly placed in the cult and worthy camp is less appealing.

Just watch it would be my advice, it's a quiet film which doesn't need a pompous critique. I saw it without prejudice and with no idea about plot etc, which I suggest is the best way to see any film. I don't know if it is "worthy" but it certainly has the black/white duality for the "hero" as per the question in the OP.

I am sorry nothing new comes to mind but the classics are set over a lot of history so you wouldn't expect something brilliant and challenging to appear that often. If you remember though the original post was about the failure of american cinima and how progress in this kind of media had moved to television.

So as to the American dream the basic premise is virtually all hollywood is a feel good fest of deliverance via american values. It is necessary to de bunk this formulaic propoganda to appreciate the difference between that which encourages and discourages thought.

When you respond to me like a complete burk and then I show you up via logic, reason and the model of civilised behaviour you cannot imagine how much conceited pleaseure I derive from it
