    Default What Flap ?

After 11 years of pestering,I have given wayand have allowed the home to be overun by a cute ickle kitten, that is growing into a cat.
It keeps on looking through the door to the garden,so me thinks it is time for a flap.
Have any of you got a microchip type one ? Do they work ? Which one do I buy ?

ps,will shortly be moving to Ashford in Kent, where I believe there are plenty of cat shitting all over the place.

Just get a good normal one that you can lock in one or both directions. I have only once had a stray come in mine when i had a cat in season. Once she was scooped out that was that.

Our cats use our big Labrador dog flap, so anything will do as long as it's big enough that the cat can get through it when it's fully grown.

We've got a normal cheap manual flap which works OK but doesn't prevent a local intruder coming in beating our cats up at night and scoffing their food. If you have concerns about "visitors" I'd suggest getting an electronic one. These are quite neat and recognise the chip your kitteh has (usually implanted when they are snipped). The lock is a one-way affair and allows any cat out, but only opens "inwards" when it recognises your cat's chip. Takes 4x AA batteries. Buy it from your local Cats Protection and the profits go to helping other cats find a home

We've had two of the microchip types.

We had an original Petporte at the old house, was very good, but the door was a little light weight and on windy days it wouldn't always return to the closed position and the canopy stuck out a fair bit, I believe the later versions are much better.

In this house I've fitted a Sureflap, the main reason was because it can run on batteries and the nearest power point is miles away, the Petporte needs to be plugged in.

5 months and they've not gone flat yet, that's with three cats coming and going. the entrance is much smaller than the petporte, but the big fat cat still manages it.

I'd be happy to use either.

Just a thought - do you NEED a flap? We've never used a flap with our cats, just let them in/out as necessary. We keep them in at night. It also means you don't have other cats coming in. I don't like cats with collars so an electronic one was out for us too. It's no great hardship not having a flap, our three aren't very demanding when it comes to wanting in/out.

I refused to fit collars to our cats, that why a microchip flap was essential.

Bit difficult letting them out as and when if everyone's out all day. You can always lock the cat flap at night, but we don't bother. Don't have much of a problem with random strangers wandering in either, but I suspect that's because our cats would have their faces off if they tried

Cats like to roam, and come and go as they please. Seems a bit tough denying them that.

The ones with separate transponders are old hat, they all work with the cat's chip now. So no need for collars and no risk the chip gets lost.

Saying that, collars can still be handy if the cat gets lost.

Our local RSPCA (where our three came from) have a folder on reception full of pictures of cat collar injuries!

Yes, they can get a leg through and get stuck but that's really only a problem with cats who aren't used to collars and who haven't been at home for the owners to sort them out. Our current cats don't have collars because they're 3 years old and rescue cats, they wouldn't accept them. But our last 2 did from an early age and they were fine with it. Though the old one did develop a bald patch round her neck under the collar which was a bit odd.

You need one of those flaps which come with a free litter tray!

I've just wasted the last half hour pegging netting around all exposed soil on the allotment and boders. Now's about the time to educate my neighbours furry shit machines that they're not welcome.

we have Sureflap too - they run on ordinary AA batteries and the batteries seem to last forever. Weigh the cost up against having all the local tomcats come in and steal their food. After 4 years, the little latch has worn out so we only use two of the settings now. Every so often she'll nudge the latch with her foot and lock herself out.

we've got one that operates with magnetic collars, stops other cats coming in the house.
