Default Hot (but not too hot) hatch

I'm looking for a small car, not too expensive (2k or so), Not too hot on the insurance but fun to drive. Oh, and insurable for a learner to be driving occassionally. Options so far are a Puma or a Fiest Zetec S. I was interested in a Fiesta ST, but the insurance is a bit too high. To be honest, the insurance is a bit high on the Puma too. The Zetec S comes out at 400 for the year, the Puma at 500 and the ST at 540.

What else should I be thinking about? Want 0-60 of no more than 10 seconds really.

MG ZR. Even the basic 1.4 has a 0-60 time of 10 seconds, and insurance isn't horrendous on them. Cheap to buy and run.

The 1.8VVC is a lot more fun, though

Isn't that more Focus sized? Want it a bit smaller than that. Sort of 106/206/fiesta/polo rather than 306/focus/golf sized.

I'd say a Clio 172, but I guess the insurance costs will rule that out.

People may take the piss, but a late model Saxo VTR (the 1.6 8v, not the 1.6 16v VTS) is a lot nippier than you'd think and the insurance isn't too bad. 100bhp in a car that's made out of kitkat wrappers means a sub 9s 0-60 iirc.

Or... a MGR ZR/25, the 1.4 K Series is a surprisingly powerful lump for such a small capacity, if you can find one with a recent MLS head gasket change it should be pretty trouble free for a few years. The 25 is a lot cheaper to insure than the ZR, but they're essentially the same car.

Falls into the same as Daihatsu Charade, Mitsubishi colt
    A Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S is sub 10 secs.

I don't think putting a learner on the insurance of anything costs that much, it's when they pass their test the big insurance bill arrives.

Of course if you got a Derv MGR ZR/25, they're only 101 or 115bhp (depending on map)... but for less than 60 you can get 140bhp out of them.

It's the same sort of ballpark as the stuff he's suggesting, though (Fiesta Zetec S is 98bhp, 0-60 9.9s), and is fun enough to drive.

Well, the Fiesta ST is a bit quicker, but he won't get one of those for 2k, and it will cost way more to insure.
