Default Front sprocket removal - Impact wrench

    Hi all

As part of my bit-by-bit destruction of Pax's ZZR, I need to get the front sprocket off. But it won't budge. I'm guessing I need an air impact wrench - I do a fair amount of spannering and am not overly bothered about the outlay if it is required.

Is it? Any decent alternatives? I will be doing about 16,000 miles a year on commuting alone, and will do all servicing except for valves and carb balancing, so I would sooner buy decent DIY tools than cheap shite and have to continually replace.

    Answers by 10 May please.

If so, I am thinking about this impact wrench and this compressor. Would it be big enough a compressor? I know that the CFM and pressure are just about big enough, but would it cope?

Alternatively, thiscompressor might be better, but the £40 difference would be quite big to the Mrs - and would pay for the impact wrench.

    Alternatives? Ta

    How about this or this?

    Its for shifting 27mm nuts.

Put the bike in gear, Chock the back wheel with some wood and get your breaker bar out

As in tried the above. I have put it in gear, put an old fork stanchion in to stop the wheel turning, used the back brake and the nut will not shift. I think it needs the breaking power of the impact wrench.

I've had similar before. An air spanner worked in a jiffy after an afternoon of sweating with normal tools.

I think an electric one would do the job; when I picked up a 2nd hand motor for the CBR600, I asked the chap to loosen the front sprocket nut for me and he used a cordless rattle gun then shifted it in about two seconds

    Heat is your friend.

A blowtorch is cheaper than a compresser and nutgun too.

Much as my wife is balking at the cost of an impact wrench, she would not be relishing the propsect of me owning a blowtorch.

And to be honest, there's quite a lot of damage I can do with blowtorch.

One other reason for the compressor and impact wrench is that a blow gun can be quite handy when trying to do brakes.

Sadly a little more than I'd be looking to spend. Or at least a little more than the Mrs would like me to spend.

It's only a gas cooker with a handle so you can wave it around.

Can you not get a grown up to do it for you?

I changed mine a while back. Bought one of those cheap 15 quid 12V impact wrenches: work off the battery (they're really meant for car wheel nuts).

Removed fairing panel, connected wrench to my (not brilliant) bike battery, and the nut was loosened in a couple of seconds.
