So, tried some full fat coke and soaking. Results: total rubbish, soaking in soapy water would have fared better IMO. (I want to take away Taipan's [Thanks]. Is that possible?)
A quick spray with some sorta bleachy hob cleaner thing out the kitchen cupboard worked way better.

Oven cleaner doesn't go well with paint, mask sensitive areas.

This is on some bare metally bits and are detached from the bike, but thanks for the heads up.

Try rhubarb water, IIRR it works reasonably well.
