    Default Electrical issue

I've just had to replace the relay that was wired up for my heated grips as it was faulty.

However with the new relay installed and the grips working again, when I switch the grips on, the dash lights flicker but if I turn the grips on full they stop.

So does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing it?

The relay uses the rear tail light as the live trigger for the relay which may explain the link to the flashing dash lights.

Could it be that it's affected by the light checking circuit? Have you tried feeding the relay from somewhere away from the lighting circuit?

Different pin configuration on the relay and the load (heated grips) are pulling through the brake light circuit?

The relay has the same pin configuration and rating as the old one.

I'm in the car today as the bike had a flat battery this morning, despite being brand new so clearly something isn't right.

    Bugger

    The correct version

-30 = constant [positive (+)] power (usually wired directly to car battery)
-85 = coil ground (wired to the negative (-) battery terminal or any grounded metal panel in the car)
-86 = coil power (wired to the control source. could be a switch, or it could be the car's IGN or ACC circuit.)
-87 = switched [positive (+)] power output. (when the relay coil is powered, lead/pin 87 is connected to lead/pin 30)

    My version

-30 = switched [positive (+)] power from brake light
-85 = wired to the negative (-) battery terminal
-86 = wired directly to car battery
-87 = wired to the heated grips

However in my defence the heated grips only power up with the ignition on and lights on, so I thought I'd got it right.

Guess what I'll be doing tonight!

So, they only heat up when Mac has the brakes on?

Explains the blisters on his hands....
