Anyone know about cylinder glazing (diesel engine)?

Turbo diesel, I regularly leave it on tickover for half an hour at a time to charge the leisure battery.

Lately I've noticed when I drive away it puts out clouds of smoke as I accelerate which slowly clears then it runs "clean", until after the next time it sits on tickover.
Some research suggests that this is caused because diesels run very cold on tickover which causes glazing to cylinder walls.

So, (if this is the cause of the smoking) does anyone know of an additive that will remove the glazing?

No but when looking at Pug 306 forum for advice i noticed a post where people were asking about the startup smoke and some say Two stroke oil helps prevent then. Dont know if that is shit or not. When i had it on my last diesel fiesta it was better after a glow plug change.

My campervan (I'm assuming that's what you're talking about) has a charging system which charges both van and leisure batteries when it's plugged in to the mains. Every week or 2 I plug it in for a few hours if we're not using it, and that seems to keep everything healthy.

If it's only when if you've left it idling that you get a problem, could you do this instead, to keep the batteries fresh?

No.

Not unless they supply 240v in remote wild camping areas.

Hence my quest for an additive.

I've tried the 2 stroke additive in my T4 (has to be quality old stuff), also a old skool turbo diesel. I think it makes it run smoother. IMO it made it worse smoking after start up & whilst idling. It's always seems to have smoked a bit like that if it's been left standing for a few days. Even worse after a month. However, I'm not bothered as if I take it for even a short run that smoke all goes & it doesn't happen again at start on the next day.

IMO it needs a run. Might as well really-does it all good, blows any condensation out of the exhaust/gearbox & get the brakes & discs all clean etc.

as far as the charging goes I leave mine on a iddly 5 amp charger overnight. The battery on mine is prolly the same size as a leisure battery, so I guess 24 hours or whatever the charger is indicating is about correct for yours.

IMO if you're going to use snake oil then Millers Diesel Power Plus (or whatever it's called this year) is good stuff. Been using it for years. Or run the tank a bit low & shove some Shell V power into it & take it for an italian tuneup. Oh yeah-one other thing. Once it's all warm it's a good thing to bounce it off the redline a couple of times say once a month. under load that is-not dip the clutch!

30-40 minutes running the engine (already fitted in the van ;-)) is all it takes to recharge, so why carry and faff around with another engine/genny/fuel?

Dcent Solar panels are expensive and budget is tight right now.

I just need an additive to remove glazing, then plan to change thermostat and remove viscous fan to raise engine temp on tickover.

Why? To prevent cylinder glazing.

Why tickover, Put a brick on the throttle once it's warm up. or do a few laps in 2nd Gear etc. Generating power is not the main purpose of a vehicle engine so it does it badly at tickover, possibly at the expense of engine life, oil life etc and well at normal running speeds. Find innovative ways to use less power. Use a gas fridge,LED Lighting, solar heated water Don't use silly pumps so you can pretend you are in your kitchen at home, use a water carrier and a plastic bowl, that's all we ever do, why people need pumped water when camping is something I've never fathomed. Gravity does it for me

Cylinder glazing is removed with a hone.

The better news is that glazed bores can't be very top of the list of likely reasons for a smoky Diesel engine.

Valve stem oil seals?

My old Transit used to chuck out a bit of blue smoke after being started and also after it had been idling for a while and the mechanic suggested that as it had done 260 000+ miles at the time it could well be valve stem oil seals.
Carried on for another 10 000 after it and just used slightly more oil.

What year is the van?

How do you think a diesel generator motor runs at very low rpm day after day without glazing the bores? a lot of the problems caused to diesel motors are the short runs, they need good long runs to burn all the deposits in the likes of the egr valve and turbo and turbo pipes, at tick over diesels run fairly cold, hence not burning the deposits and when you kick it into life you get a cloud of smoke.

Best thing I did with the EGR valve of my last van was to blank the useless bastard off.
