Mandrive just loads lines of text and hangs for ever till i get fed up. 2 hours at the weekend. work from disk will boot then screen goes black and stays there.
Mint. loads two lines of text from boot and hangs for ever.
Ubuntu. get to menu for load from disk or install. hangs on both options.
In the comp is xp pro formated to NTFS. 256mb ram and 1.4 intel centrino.
ubuntu is just been sitting again gor the past hour, was trying to run from disk again.
cheers
Mint is Ubuntu..but in green. Both will happily install over NTFS. It sounds to me like you have a hardware problem tbh.
Have you tried running the live version of Ubuntu or Mint from cd first? Don't install, just boot and run from cd. IME that always works and well...unless there's a hardware problem.
Just stuck Mandriva back in to try again and all the text is loading now.
Dont think it is hardware as the xp was running fine, slow with the lack of ram but no problems.
Are you booting from cd? Insert the cd before you switch the pc on. If it loads up xp then you probably need to change the drives the pc boots from first.
Is this your only pc. Have you tried Linux before?
Mandriva looking like it is going to work, slowly.
Booting from cd and trying to install failed. Booting from cd just now with mandriva as i think there is an icon to install once i am up and running from disk. Yip, BIOS are set to boot from cd. No it is not my only comp, got this old laptop so i am going to try and run 100% open source on it and if i like i might convert.
I tried to demo Linux to a friend once using a live cd on his laptop. If I remember correctly it was a Phillips machine and it steadfastly refused to boot any Linux cd I put in there.
What make and model is your laptop? It could be a hardware issue.
Try burning the linux ISO at a slower speed to match the laptop's optical drive.
A bootable disc burnt at 32x is going to give an 8x cd-Rom a hard time.
