Default phone call telling me my computer is infected

I recieved a phone call today, sounded like an Indian guy telling me he worked for Microsoft.
He said my computer was sending out information to Microsoft that it was infected with a virus and could infect other users if i did not resolve the problem.

I was suspicous but he said i should look on 'My Computer' then click 'Manage' then
'System tools' then 'Event viewer'. I was then greeted with a list of how many Errors and Warnings my computer had over the last 7 days. He then said because my computer had more than 12 errors it was in a CRITICAL condition and he would arrange an enginner to come round to my house to fix it.
I told him not to bother as i would fix it myself.

    Is this a con?

Me too and I couldn't find anything obvious on google either with the little amount of info given.

Might be nice to know who was running it and how the scam works - how they got your phone number, how they knew you had errors in your event viewer, etc. Sounds like malware, so the name of that too and how it was removed please?

    Clearly a scam.
I've yet to come across any Windows based machine that doesn't have any errors in EV, so clearly some dodgy bastids are preyin' on the 'not so clued up' users.

Hopefully khd will shed some light on the situation shortly.

It's not new. It's well-known and has been reported many times over in the last 6 months.

Doesn't take a Microsoft engineer* to work that one out.

like i said, i was suspicous and there was no way i would agree any payment to a random caller. The part that confused me was he never asked for any money and even suggested i get the problem fixed by my own engineer.
Not sure what the con was , maybe it would have become clear if i had stayed on the phone longer.

Perhaps the 'scripts' they may have asked you to run could have included a keylogger or similar, for access to your online accounts. 's all a bit vague.

I reckon if you stay on the phone they'll get you to download something and install it which will fix the problems.

I know people who could fall for this sort of thing. My wife and her sister spring to mind.

I reckon I could. I'm much more likely to trust or follow someone's lead if they're talking to me, rather than an email or web post where you have time to consider what's being asked of you - if you're busy trying to understand some Indian guy then you're perhaps not concentrating on what he's trying to get you to do. Which is probably why they do it in person.
