I cannae see them there big elastic bands lasting long if you have to take 'em off every time to put the phone in a dock or car holder.

Best "fix" I've seen;



Looks good, works, wouldn't interfere with docks or holders (if the journo had used a scalpel), cheap to replace if worn out

What is that fix? Looks like a brass plate, are you suggesting he cut away his docking station(s) to make it fit? That will suck if he needs a replacement or upgrades in future.
