Question Help needed with antivira virus removal

    Hi All
My son has antivira virus on his netbbok and I can't remove the sodding thing! Tried advice on net for renaming malawarebytes and installing it whilst in safe mode (xp pro) on his account and administrator a/c. Then tried cccleaner and doing the same. then tried running both under safe mode but tis still there each time you reboot. Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Dr.Web CureIt! LiveCD
    Dr.Web CureIt! How it works

Dr.Web CureIt! Live USB (I guess you might need the USB version with a netbook)

I used this to heal some nasty virus which everybody on the net said was incurable. It had infected all the exe files and Avast would only let me delete them.

Hi taipan. Im surprised malwarebytes didnt kill it! Its normally my first line of attack when I fix any pc!

I found this guide while having a look for an answer for you.

It explains it better than I ever could.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/viru...antivirus-soft

Follow it to the letter. Big tip with these kinds of virus is to have all the files you need on a usb stick cause the virus normally locks out the internet. (easy fix btw).

    HTH

If there is anything you don't get just comeback and ill help you as much as I can.

This reminds me of the time I needed to drill a hole in my desk but didn't have any drill bits - it took me two evenings with an electric drill and a Phillips screwdriver bit to do a mediocre job of it. The point being, you're trying to use the wrong tools and making it difficult for yourself, Antivir is neither malware nor any kind of bloatware which needs optimizing. Legit programs which are notoriously difficult to remove generally have removal tools available for download from the manufacturers' web sites.

It's not Avira he wants to remove, it's antivira, which seems to be one of these fake av programs with a name similar enough to a genuine product to cause confusion

    Remove antivira av

Thanks for all the replies. It seem malawarebytes did remove it but I have been left with Veoh webplayer causing all kinds of problems. I'm struggling to get rid of that but at least disabling it in via run/msconfig/start up can stop it. Even then i can't get online using IE as although the PC is connected to teh internet it wont load any pages and I keep getting res://something or other.dll.htm#. So I tried installing firefox and got a proxy server not found message. In firefox advanced settings somewhere I found the option to turn proxy settings off and its now back online. However this is clearly a workaround and i'd like to get shot of veoh web bastard player and be able to use IE or FF without workarounds if possible.

Is there any good reason why you can't re-install the machine in a couple of hours rather than try and fight it? It's often a quicker and more absolute solution that codging around for days.

the netbook came from ebuyer but dont think it came with any discs? Although I do have an XP Pro disc somewhere I'm sure. Will I hit authenticity problems if I do that?

maybe. the disk you use isn't the issue, the serial number is. Have you got one of those?

How old is the son, btw? Old enough to fix it himself and learn the error of his ways?

Not sure, i'll have to have a look tonight.

To be fair he looked it up on the net and found some answers but ran it past me first as it involved regedit. So I took over from there.

Hey Taipan that softwate sets your internet browser to look for a proxy server rather than none at all ( which is normal). Its quite a common trick so that you cant use the internet to look for antiviruses etc. In that link i gave there are instructions on how to set your proxy in IE.

In internet options click on connections tab the click Lan on the bottom right then set it to no proxy. That should solve that one.
