I've tried upgrading twice this afternoon but I keep getting download errors, think the servers must be too busy

I don't upgrade. I have two partitions for operating systems, current and previous. When a new version comes out I install it over "previous" and it then becomes current. I'll reinstall all my apps using dpkg and dselect like this (I've only done it once, these are the notes I made at the time so no guarantees ):

    In a terminal run:
    Code:
    dpkg --get-selections > installed-software
You should now have a text file called “installed-software” in your home directory. It should contain a list of all the installed packages. Open it with a text editor to confirm that it’s what you expected. You need to make sure you’ll have access to the file when you’ve reinstalled the OS. If you’re installing the OS on a different computer take a copy of it. If you’re reinstalling on the same computer and your /home directory is on a separate partition you’re set to go. If you don’t have a separate partition for your /home directory, why not? You’ll need to do whatever you normally do to save your data.
Install the new OS and make sure it’s up to date.
    In a terminal run
    Code:
    sudo dpkg --set-selections < installed-software
    Now run
    Code:
    sudo dselect
    You might need to run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install dselect
first if dselect is not installed.
Put the kettle on or open a bottle of wine or do something interesting for a couple of hours while 3.5GB or so is downloaded and installed.

I've been very pissed off with Ubuntu since they put that "Unity" shit into 11.04, so I haven;t been keeping up with developments. Have they kept it / dropped it? Not easy to see from the web site.

    EDIT:

The legacy GNOME desktop environment, which was available as an alternate login session in 11.04, is no longer part of the default Ubuntu installation in 11.10
Fucking arse. I hate the Unity interface.

Dreamy Ubuntu 11.10, the Oneiric Ocelot, slinks into view

In that case I guess I'll stick with 11.4 until I find something I like better. Mint looks good.
