    Default Media Server photo lag

I have got my photos / music and video on a WD 1tb networked drive. all hunky dory, however I have noticed that photos take ages to display on either my ps3 or ipad when I 'look' for them through the media server software /apps on either device...music or video files start playing straight away and they don't ever buffer or get stuck...even HD video...so why do photos not display in a reasonable timeframe? sometimes the ps3 gives me a media server error message, and the ipad just hangs for ages sometimes taking minutes to load up one 4mb photo...that can't be right surely.! I can't work it out...!
I have got a Virgin media 'n' router that the NAS is hooked up to, and my line speed is 20mbps...and everything works great other than the photos...I'm baffled...anyone know what the problem might be..?
btw, I'm not a techie kind of bod, so please keep it simple if you can..! cheers

What format are the photos? What did you take them on?

If they're RAW files from an SLR/decent compact for example then they have to be converted on the fly into something viewable that takes time. It's one possibility anyway.

And fwiw, your line speed of 20Mbps isn't relevant here unless you're going via the net to access the files.

thanks, didn't think it was important, but added it in case it was..!
photos have been taken on sony dsc100 compact, and sony dslr A350, and a panasonic compact too...files are just .jpeg and not RAW vary in file size from c.2.5mb to 4.5mb per photo...don't think they should need to be converted to anything, which is why it's buggin me i can't work it out..!!!
maybe it is a file type thing, but its odd all .mp3 and .mpeg's .h264 etc don't lag at all.
    cheers.
