Wifi Speeds

The wifi in our accommodation is really really slow at the moment. Its been getting slower since we moved in.

We've had a chat and no one is downloading porn!! Or anything else on a regular basis.

Is there a way of finding out how fast it is and how fast it should be?

Bearing in mind that we are at 1800m in the French Alps - apparently everything is slower here??

Try turning the router off and on again. If it keeps slowing down then it could be the router is a bit duff or may be overheating.

Plug your lappy directly into the router (don't tell anyone else).

Mine does this at home. It's been suggested it's just establishing a better link on a contended line when I reboot. For a faster line you probably wouldn't notice but mine's pretty slow so if it slows down even more it's a proper PITA.

Netgear, couldn't tell you the model but it's got pretty blue lights on top

sounds good - but the router is in someone's bedroom! Not sure he'd be too keen to find me 'parked' in there with my puter!! LOL

Try changing the wifi channel, it may be conflicting with another device.

Try speed test.net to check the speed over wifi.
Then plug a lappy directly into the router and run speed test again.
This will tell you if it's your wifi that is slow or your actual internet connection.

It's the uphill stretch to the Alps. Data flows faster downhill. You need some cat6 cabling, is has bidirectional speeds. I have some here if you want to buy some.

That happens in the chalets too. But in our accomm there aren't so many apple thingys - usually. Tonight, its just me and my netbook and the ipod (which may well be connected but isn't being used!) So, even when there's just me here, its slow as . . .

I like that. I'll tell the whinging guests that too

No idea what cat6 cabling is or if it helps data flow uphill better. So prob won't be buying any for now!
