I've wanted a stonkin' games machine for some years, and finally I've decided to treat myself to an Alienware Aurora, with a few upgrades from the standard model added.

Having Win 7 Pro, will hopefully allow me to play those games that ran flawlessly on XP, but give freeze up problems on Win 7 Home, as Win 7 Pro has 'XP mode' built in, (so I've been told).

The GeForce GTX 690 has had rave reviews, and will be the first time I've had such a high spec card.

So what say the TRC computer geeks? A good gaming / video machine?

Damn, that is a nice rig! Mine is getting on a bit. AMD 6 core 1090T Phenom, 16GB 1300 DDR3, 1TB 7200rpm HDD, 1GB Radeon 6670 and a decent Coolermaster 700W PSU. Just need the SSD HDD to get mine to a quicker speed for what I use it for. Graphics card prices have dropped a bit for the higher performance cards, so it is a case of waiting and saving. I'll use Acronis to shift the OS over to the SSD drive and use the 1TB drive for data etc....

Enjoy gaming on that, it will fly!

What XP games are you playing? A machine like that deserves some nice shiny new DX11 games!

Makman - ebuyer were doin' a 240GB SSD for £89 delivered. More than enough for an OS & few programs/apps.
I'm lookin' to build a cheeky HTPC (still! ) to accompany the TV; however, I won't be affordin' any Alienware.

everyone ive spoken to about gaming pc's say stay away from alienware because your paying much more for the name

Yeah! I love Win 7, but one of my favourite games, 'Fallout 3', kept locking up. It worked perfectly on XP, and then a geek acquaintance of mine, mentioned that Win 7 Pro has the XP mode.

That's the reason I went for Pro on the new rig.

Most games I play, are ok on my old machine, but some newer titles stutter a little, and as this one is coming on for 4 years old, and had some heavy use, I thus decided to go for the Alienware.

I wouldn't bet a lot of money that XP mode will runs games flawlessly, but with the ££ you're spending why not fit another HD as well and install XP properly there?

Just unplug the Win 7 drive, plug the other one in (so nothing gets confused, you want this install to have it's own MBR) and install XP.

Then reattach the Win7 drive as well. Set the BIOS to boot to the Win 7 drive by default, then if you want to XP install reboot, press F12 and choose the other drive.

A little bit of hassle but it will work.

I've been playing Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas in Win 7 Home Premium no problem......
