Default USB Memory stick playing up

I have a Kingston 32GB memory stick. Now normally I just use it to store music on and have it plugged into my van stereo. Recently I've been using it to transfer files from one laptop to another (mainly films/TV).

However now it's playing up, I've put 2 films on it but it won't let me put any more on as it says there is no space but the properties tab shows over 20GB of space??

I've formatted it but it hasn't made any difference

What else can I try/ do?

You can chuck it in the bin. I had an SD card do the same thing. Nothing I did would fix the problem.

what file system are you formatting it as? if your films are over 4GB in size you'll need to use NTFS rather than FAT32.

But its true. Killed the format and ended up with it being RAW. Brought it back to FAT, then FAT32 and then NTFS. Was it fixed? nope. New one was a couple of quid. Old one was taking up more than a couple of quids worth of time.

Any you comment about using NTFS for big files. Yes its true but most car units and DVD players will want FAT32 format like what Jody says he uses the pen stick for.

great. lovely. you had a duff SD card. not really applicable here though, when he's asking for advice on a USB sitck with large files.

ffs. that my point. it works until he tries to put large files on it. it's called diagnosis. until we know if the files are of 4GB or what file system he uses i'd not advise him to throw it away just yet...

what are you actually formatting it as? Will modern Windows do anything but NTFS for 32Gb?

oh and are you copying to FAT32 and your file is over 4Gb? How is, say, 3.5Gb

failing that, pre-glow in the prison hiding "place" for an hour or two and it'll perform, well, differently...

Very good. You are making the assumption that Jody is thick. He did say its now started to play up. Not why wont this work. Had he said why then you can go into the asking him the format. I go with what I read. 20 gig free from a 32 gig stick with two films on it. Big films.

a format might not get rid of the issue. It may be something that can't be fixed but if it's FAT32 then you can't get a 4Gb or bigger file onto it.

I would consider using diskpart (run as admin) to clean the drive completely. Alternately, spinrite to scan the drive or UBCD to run a proper tool to low-level it.

is it possible to write and fill the drive with small files? what file system is the drive and is it MFT or GUID?

no. i'm making the assumption YOU are. one of us does this for a living...one of us asked leading questions in order to diagnose the problem...one of us said put it in the bin.

12 GB for two films? how big are your 1080p rips?

6Gb a movie for 1080p is alright but I tend to pull my 720p stuff down to 3Gb and my 1080p to 4.2Gb. You have a very good experience on a 46" telly.

Mind you space is not an issue, I have 16Tb capacity on my network. Nearly 7Tb is free ATM.....

My biggest rip is 33Gb. Well I say rip, I don't actually have an optical drive on any machine that is actually ever powered on any more.

    Anyway, where's Jody?

That is nice you do this for a living. We will look up to you from now on. Before we do look at his question again. He said "Recently I've been using it to transfer files from one laptop to another (mainly films/TV)." Mainly film, see that bit? Then he said "However now it's playing up" Do forgive me for thinking he has done this before.
