Default Any server experts on here?

Bit of a stab in the dark this one.

I have a 2008 R2 Server that is for some unknown reason not starting it's DNS service on startup.

I can manually start the DNS Service but after a restart the service will fail to start even though all of it's recovery options are set to 'restart the service'.

Obviously this is causing my quite a headache. I had the error last night and resolved by re-installing DNS, but at 4am this morning the service stopped again and DNS has once again deleted all of it's forward and reverse lookup zones, until i manually restart the DNS Service again in which case all is well.

Any ideas. I have error 408/407 in event log and have gone through all the technet resolution answers but to no avail.

Anyone has this error before and resolved...?

Has anyone got a large hammer...?

Just been a couple of updates for win8 over the last 2 days, maybe an auto update has borked something?

    Is it on a VM?

Have you got Dynamic zone updates turned on?

IIRc some of the zone info is stored in AD, any other AD related problems?

Is it a single DNS server or does it have a failover on the same network, and were both shut down at the same time? And what's the error message in the event logs?

It's a single physical server not a VM unfortunately.

Dynamic zone updates for A and PTR records is on but only when requested from a DHCP Client.

Server is on a static IPV4 address. No AD issues, DHCP is fine, all routing is fine and nslookup resolves. All DNS forwarders resolve OK.

It's fine once i start the DNS service, but the service will just randomly stop at a random time throughout the day/night, stopping anyone from logging in or going on the t'internet etc.

It's been up and working since 10am and is still ok, but i have no confidence with it staying that way...

Doesn't fix the problem, but you could write a batch script that does a 'net start' on the DNS service and schedule it to run every minute. If it's already running it'll just error, if it's stopped it might start the service.

If you're clever you could probably write it to check the service status before running the net command.

Have you changed AV recently, ESET sends some of our 2008R2 server mental, especially Exchange.

Might be worth turning off an AV for a period, just in case. Probably teaching your mother so suck eggs, but you have checked the time is in sync with the DC, right?

No new AV, time is set fine. I do not sync time with a DC as this is the DC. I use council DC's as forwarders, maybe i need to sync the time with their DC's to see if that resolves it.

Thing is, i have another 20 odd servers running just fine and they are forwarding to council DC's without a time sync, so am unsure if that is going to resolve the problem...

This server runs sweet except from this. It's my least problamatic server until now. It's serving about 250 clients and has so much bespoke group policy that it will PITA if i have to rebuild.

If it's the DC and the DNS on the same box then I don't think time sync will be a problem, I only ask because kerberos gets a bit moody if there's more than a 5 minute difference.

    Yep.

I found that out a few months ago where i had forgot to set clients to sync with the DC. Was gicing all sorts of very bizarre errors. Caused my batch and VBS scripting to go up the shitter as well.

That's nothing. I couldn't get the Mail Store service to start (2008R2 & Exchange 2010) after a reboot.

The error suggested that time was out of sync with the DC... I checked, checked and check again. Couldn't spot any issues.

Turned out that VMware host that the VM's were running on had to have the same time too, and there was me thinking the hypervisor was transparent to the VM's!

Re time sync: one of the domain controllers will be a PDC emulator, this should be configured as an NTP server. Other DC's will get their time from the primary, clients on the domain will get their time from any DC on their site.
