Do what Never done an apprenticeship in my life, I did go you Uni though. That's what got me into bikes, I needed to get from Wembley to Twickenham as quickly and cheaply as possible. Got a Kwak KH100 and never looked back.

Mine had a topbox that could fit 18 cans of larger and a pot noddle. Loved that bike

The one I passed my test on belonged to the local bike shop, they leant it to me for my part 2, that was the only time I rode one, did my part 1 on a KE125 of theirs.

I had one too... although it may be a premonition as you actually DID come back

Just to conclude this thread, it looks like the answer is to be in the right place at the right time when someone is selling what you what for a very reasonable price. Looking at eBay since I started this thread and still occasionally now the best I would have got for 1000 would be a scabby old 250 enduro. Even for 2000 it would have been a ropey KTM lc4 or old fashioned looking CCM. The fact that I ended up with a Husky 610sm is nothing short of a miracle. I am not exaggerating either, do your own searches for supermotos, under 2000 you would be lucky, for 1000 even an enduro is pushing it.

I think you paid a fair price for it, considering I've been trying to sell it at that price for a couple of months and had no interest.
