Default What is Shell BT grease 3

My Yamaha manual keeps telling me to lubricate X parts with lubricant Shell BT grease 3, but I cant seem to cross ref with a castrol grease or find out what type of grease it is? Anyone know?

FWIW its for reassembling the cranks splines on a variator on a Tmax CVT transmission.

you need a 'polyurea grease' unfortunately seems very expensive

    eg CASTROL FIRETEMP XT2

Castrol - Optimol Firetemp XT2 - High Temperature Grease - Geo Broughton

quote for future ref when the link is dead:

Castrol Firetemp XT2 is a high temperature grease for rolling and sliding bearings at normal to medium peripheral speeds and high operating temperatures. The fully synthetic, thermally stable structure guarantees long relubrication intervals at maximum operational reliability.
    info:
    Castrol Industrial - High-Temperature]

found this which is affordable 5.24 so I would probably use it:

    manufacturer info:

    http://www.molyslip.co.uk/high_performance_lubricants/

Molyslip EHT: Extra high temperature grease.

Bentone grease with MoS2 and graphite. Formulated to ensure that even if carbonisation occurs the residue will remain friable, with the MoS2 and graphite present to maintain lubrication. Temperature range up to 250C.

IIRC Castrol has a free helpline. I called them once about grease and they seemed pretty good.

    Interesting ...
BT greases are quite old products and as far as I know are obsolete - info I have suggests they are Lithium or Lithium Complex and are good at high temperatures ( how high I don't know but normal Lithiums are up to 120c is ) - but for splined shafts you normally expect some moly or graphite as a dry film lubrication for anti seize / fretting protection.

I don't think Firetemp is right as it's a Polyurea soap ( and as it's a very specialised Industrial synthetic would cost an arm and a leg ) - the High temperature grease is a Lithium Complex so would be closer, but no moly in this. Castrol Moly grease is a lithium multipurpose grease with Moly in it.

I have come across this before with Suzuki France who had some issues with the CVT unit on the AN650 ... I suggested a Lithium Complex grease for this - don't know how they got on, I never heard back from them.

What I do have is some Castrol Pyroplex Blue, and ultra heavy duty, tacky Lithium complex with lubricating solids - designed for off highway quarry applications up to 150C - might be just the job - drop me an email Taipan and I'll stick some in a bag and post it over for you to try

is it steel on steel, or plastic at all ? if it's steel on steel and you have some moly grease, I'd probably try that

    Cheers

    Spokey
