I've got a chance to get one - could be any sort.

What advantages do they have over a lap top other than that they start up quickly and are more portable?

They're easier to wipe biscuit crumbs off than laptops.

    Don't get a paracetamol.

    Screen's tiny. Keyboard's ridiculous.

Lightweight portability, instant switch on and much better for general browsing. No good for actually looking at anything proper though but I only surf and hit Twitter and hit FB and TRC etc...

^ this. Or a bluetooth keyboard.

I have a Dell XPS12. I don't shut it down but it boots instantly - about 10 seconds from cold.

Android and iOS should do most things you want to do with apps. A Windows device will also do what you want as long as it's not RT.

So what do you want to do?

A tablet is great for consumption, rubbish for anything productive.

There's some perfectly usable ones from 40 now if you want basic browsing with Android OS.

I have a laptop and an Iphone, so can't really justify an inbetweeny. None support for Flash is a pain on the Iphone but can be resolved with proxy browsers like Puffin.

For sofa browsing, if you're phone isn't up to it, one of my mates bought a 9" screen Chinese tablet for under 60.
Seems ok, all the usual ports and a card slot. Android's a bit naff, but the card slot would probably enable another OS installation.

I don't think the instant boot aspect makes much difference. I boot my iPad once every few months. It'll switch on from sleep instantly of course but then so will my laptop and desktop.

The portability is much more important and it's not just that they're a bit smaller and lighter. They're more portable in a way that means you'll actually take it around the house or to bed with you in a way that you just don't bother with a laptop. And the most useful device is the one you have with you

I have and have had many laptops. At home the split between iPad and laptop use is about 99:1 though, and same for the rest of the family. Unless you need to type something involved or run something that is laptop-only then the iPad is easier, quicker, smaller, lighter, more portable, more comfortable, more sociable and more likely to be in arm's reach.

I disagree. They're definitely more about consumption than anything else and probably only really designed originally with that in mind, but it's just not true any more.

I think it's a bit of a myth tbh, on iPad anyway. Look at the iPad app charts and it's dominated by games of course. But no.4 in the paid apps is a word-processing app, no.7 video editing. No. 19, music creation/production, 20 is spreadsheets, 21 presentation creation and so on. It's mainly games but there are music production, drawing and work productivity apps spread all over. And they work really well. As I've said in other threads, for music production and editing, the iPad has changed the game completely. Android is admittedly very different and doesn't really have the content creation stuff.

iPads are for playing Clash of Clans. Anything else is merely to excercise the battery while waiting for your next defence upgrade to complete.

Only nine days now and I'll have my level nine Town Hall.

Probably all bought by people like me; hopefull that I'll be able use my ipad for something more useful than coming on here and freecell shortly before realising that they are shit, like every other 'productive app' i've downloaded.

Not necessarily the fault of the app - more a limitation of the device.
