I went over to the Wolf place this afternoon & on the way stopped by a place that has all sorts of old shit for sale. Absolute treasure trove of old vices. He had a Littlestown, Columbian, Reed, Morgan & a really old Craftsman, all HUGE except the Littlestown... The Morgan even had a smaller vise welded to the back end of the slide...a twofer... That was inside a complete blacksmith shop that had enough tools for possibly 4 shops....
Only one he would sell was the Columbian which was siezed up & he wanted $100 for that.. no deal....

    ......Then I found the Anvil....
There's a place close to me that has a massive anvil for sale, I keep looking at it and generally wanting it but even though its cheap for what it is, its still too much money for me.
Go on, bung the picture of it up.

I've been following this thread since it started and I to have been corrupted/inspied. They are reorganising at work and were throughing out a set of drawing draws. Four draws 1500mm wide by 1000mm deep with a nice solid wood top. All the draws have reinforced bottoms but are a little shallow. I thought with a little reconstruction, spacing out the draws a bit more put some partitions in and some sturdy legs I'll have a nice new workbench with more storage.
Borrowed the works truck to take it home and spent the weekend making the legs out of some unused fence posts and other wood lying around. problem will be mounting the draws on the legs and locating it in a single garage with three motorbikes in and the existing workbench (which the wife thinks I'm scrapping).

Don't know whether to transfer my existing vice or get a new old vice. I thought of think, bigger workbench bigger vice but being only an amatuer wood butcher/ metal torturer I don't have any great need for an additional vice it would just be a nice thing to have.

leave the drawers shallow, it makes it a lot easier to find stuff, the shallow drawers are reallyy good for spanners/screwdrivers, etc.

Aye, a few deep drawers are good for big things, but far too easy to loose small things in. I had one fairly big drawer with spare & oversize spanners in - a complete PITA to find anything in, be-it a 27 or an 8! I'm going to make a complete new unit to go in that space, itll be mostly shallow drawers.

interestingly, the nut appears to be replaceable if you're heavy handed enough to actually strip it, which I would imaging would take some doing.
Can't quite tell but that looks like THIS item on Ebay for a buy it now of 141.

Its the same outfit, thats for sure, looks like the more modern pattern thats on the Swindens web page. The BiN price is about a 1/4 of the new price IIRC , maybe less.

Another ZRX victim: I just bought a Farriers vice off eBay, for a fiver!

Needs collecting from Barnsley but I'm sure something else will crop up to make it worth my while.

    Screwd.

I had an email back from the Swindens guy, looks like my vice is pre 1950. Replacement hard jaws are 35.

Not for 35, they have some wear, but they are still pretty good.

I saw them as I was looking through the other stuff that Bridge Supply was selling and as they are in Keighley its not a total pisstake of a journey if there's something worth getting at the right price there.

Not got the cash the moment.
