    Default Fazer 600s ....

    tell me about them...

just bagged myself a 2001 Mk1 Fazer for very little money..been standing for a while so needs a service and proper clean ..but what else do I need to watch out for? any known faults/issues or sensible upgrades that are usually done etc..

Is it a good bike for a runaround or should I just clean it up and sell it on??

    TIA

I think you'd hate it after having a versys as a runaround.
No engine braking, no performance under a squillion RPM (but it will 'go' when you wind it on), a fairing that blasts the wind into your helmet, lights that are about as good as 2 glowworms shagging....

    Flog it

Front sprocket nuts work loose on some, never had any problem with mine.

Forks are squishy and my yoke bolts would untorque themselves.

Gearbox clonky round town and the gear linkage is a bit puny.

    The headlight shiteness is legendary.

I thought they pull well from lowish revs for a 4.

If you've got long legs you might find it uncomfortable, mine was shocking on the knees after an hour or so.

I loved the looks and might have another one.

depends on what you want it for - as a commuting tool, it's great, for a Sunday out and out mental blast, maybe not.

Lights are pathetic, brakes are pretty good, spares cheap and plentiful and they can take a beating - mine's been written off 3 times, and still going strong, looks like crap, but does the job.

These guys know the lot about them - Fazer Owners Club - Unofficial

Thanks..thats the sort of stuff I need...hopefully picking it up tomorrow if I can get it started, then after a good clean and check over I shall bung it in for an MOT and see what it needs before spending any money on bits.............

As somebody said, the headlights are crap, the forks like better springs and oil if you're a bit hefty, you will look daft if you're over 6 foot becasue your knees will be sticking out in the breeze, but they're one of the few bikes that suprised me by being so much better than I had imagined.

If it's been stood, there's a good chance the back brake will be siezed. There are alternate rear calipers which can go on, which are better. R1 or Fazer 1000 IIRC and maybe TDM or TRX with a bit of modding. The FOC-U forum Aphex linked to will have all the info you need on that.

There is also a mod you can do to the headlights to bring both on at the same time. It's pretty easy, again all the info is on the FOC-U site. It's an improvement, but they'll still be crap.

The suspension is baggy as others have said, but it's a capable, reliable bike. Pretty comfy for distance, fairing works OK. I found a double bubble screen was an improvement.

Mine had been stood for 4 years when I bought it. It just needed a new battery and service and has been very reliable ever since. I replaced the back brake caliper on mine (a '98 ) last year, The exhaust has just started blowing a bit at the join between the end can and link pipe (fixed with silicone sealant) other than that it's just an annual service. It gets pretty badly neglected really, but still gets me to work every day.

It's been dropped a couple of times and now sports a glorious(?!?) matt black paint job. It looks like a bag of shit, but I really enjoy riding it.

    That's about it.

I could have pretty much any bike I want but I have an old Fazer. It's my third one. I'm 6'2" and I find it comfy (which a slightly taller screen fitted).

My mate at work was looking for a "get back into bikes" bike a few years ago and he decided on a Fazer 600 ................ 4 years on and he still rides it all year round and did 2 winters of 300 miles a week commuting on it.

Cracking little commuter bike and apart from the nomal chains/sprockets and tyres he hasnt had a single issue with it in all that time

Undo the bolt holding the tank to the frame, (headstock end), take seat off, loosen the bolt by the seat, hinge the tank up, fuel tap on the underside of the tank. Cannot get to it with the tank in place.
