Default I want a Trail bike - where should I look?

Got about £1700 to spare and am looking for (preferably) a 600cc+ trail bike. Looked on ebay and am watching a couple of auctions but very little else seems available. Anyone know of any good shops or dealers that specialise in 2nd hand trailies?

    Cheers.

Doubt you'd get a 600 worth having for 1700 retail. Good XRs seem to command good money. There's a Kwak KLR on ebay that might be worth a look?

Know very little about KLR600s and this one has a later 650 engine in place of the original. Price is good but 1986? Mind you, if the engine's ok... Anyone have any knowledge of the marque?

RAP always have a few, generally very nice ones, often imports. Never cheap but cheap trailies are rarely good IME.

There's a tidy Transalp and a lovely twin headlight XT600.

The TDM looks pretty good for the money.

The KLR's are quite well thought off in N America. Imho you can't go wrong with an old school XT600. Try giving David Lambeth engineering a shout as he deals with a lot of big trailies (overland prepping etc) and might be able to flog you a good one, or point you in the right direction.

Daft question maybe, but why need a 600+ just to potter along green lanes ?

It's wouldn't just be for green laning. I need a second vehicle for a number of reasons and I haven't had a trail bike for many may years. Don't do that many biking miles annually any more so would prefer a bike I want to ride as opposed to one I got because it was 'sensible'.

MT 03s are very un-trailbikelike to ride, I found it felt like more scooter like, probably very good around town though and they look good.

The DRZ400 will crack a ton so it isn't slow. You don't really need loads of power on that sort of bike unless you're gonna mess around popping wheelies all over the place. A 600 will be lumpy, probably fairly old and less capable off road. You'll get a pretty good DRZ for that money.

Fern has just ridden to Nepal on hers so they're serious dualsport.
