Wink SORN....a quick question for them that KNOW.....

Ok, quick question, I have no doubt there will be a myriad of answers....

My Bike is currently SORN...because of the continuous Insurance bollox.
I DIDN'T send my tax disc back in because there is no requirement to do so and because I knew it'd lose me more money for the month or so the bike was SORN etc.
I will be re-insuring the bike fairly shortly am I correct in my assumption that re-insuring it will cancel the SORN declaration, as it will then be Taxed, insured and mot'd all as required by RT law...?
    Yes I've searched...
Yes I found nothing of note...
Yes I lost the will to live part way thru my search for the answers, so I decided to ask you lot....

    I'm not 100% sure but....

I SORN'd a bike. The tax disc became void but you don't get a refund unless you send it back separately.

I think if you want to unSORN your bike you will need to re-tax it at the full rate.

I believe there were recent changes which make it illegal to have current road tax on a vehicle if it's not insured.

Well...I've found this below which pertains to the insurance and SORN side of things....

"If it is decided to bring the car back onto the road and the vehicle is insured, either with a conventional policy for a full 12 months or by a temporary car insurance policy, nothing has to be done by the owner regarding the SORN declaration because the details of the policy are entered up on the MID database, and since the DVLA have access to this the SORN is automatically cancelled. However, if and when the current insurance policy expires, it must either be renewed or a fresh SORN declared. Failure to do this will bring initially a warning letter, then a fine and finally the car could possibly be confiscated by the police, taken away "

Kin shite this all is.... there's nothing definitive I can find that says I HAVE to send the tax disc back.... everything so far is all about how to claim a refund etc....
I'll wait till it's insured again and then see what it all says then.....
failing that...they'll have to catch me and take me alive !

You don't HAVE to send it back, you can keep the tax disc of an uninsured vehicle, but you'll end up doing porridge.

Are you sure? AFAIAA declaring it sorn means you aren't breaking the law. Not sending it back just means you won't get a refund.

Try taxing it again online and see what happens.

Aye, pretty sure. The SORN system wasn't complicated enough, so now you have to SORN and send your tax disc back when your insurance expires or get re-insured. Obviously DVLA will refund you for every day of unused tax and not round down the time you have left on your tax disc to the nearest month.

SORN invalidates the tax disc. If you put it back on the road you will need to apply for a new disc. All you can do with the old disc is send it in for a refund, or bin it.

On insurance if it's not SORNed it needs to be insured, simples.

Shit system but then the whole idea of SORN is a pointless bureaucratic exercise.
