Geocaching Genesis

I recently came to the conclusion that I seem to do the same thing day in day out. Wake up, travel to work, work, go home, mess around on the internet, watch some TV, walk the dog, play with the kids. So I decided to find a new hobby, something I have never done before, something new, something to expand my horizons.

I wanted to find something relatively inexpensive, fairly simple to get started with and if possible something the entire family could enjoy. Out of this came this TRC thread:

After many great suggestions, Geocaching came up (thanks Fulltilt). Having never heard of this I duly went off to Google and did 5 minutes of research.

Geocaching immediately caught my attention, I cannot believe that this has been going on for so long and has remained largely under the radar. Rather than reinvent the wheel here is a quote from Wikipedia that summarises what this is all about:

Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook. Larger containers can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is most often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek", sharing many aspects with orienteering, treasure-hunting, and waymarking.
Although Geocaching had piqued my curiosity I still wasn't ready to commit to it as my new hobby, there were still other options such as Fencing, Falconry, RC Helicopters. After a little more hunting around I came across this site the contents of which led me to discount the other options:

Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site

In summary this site is "base camp" for all Geocachers. On here I found details of just under a million different caches dotted around the globe.

On this site I found details of a Geocache located within 200 metres of my front door (and at least 5 within a mile). I have walked past this location countless times over the years and never once did I suspect that there was this "secret" going on right under my nose.

So this Geocaching lark seems to be right up my street. Lets see where we go from here.
