In my experience you can feel a Challenger 2 when you are near it as well as hear it, so even if the driver was completely blind, I'm amazed that they managed to pull out in front of it.

Also IME most people's reaction to being confronted with a tracked armoured vehicle is to stay well out of the way, pull over even when they don't need to and generally give you loads of room. Even vehicles that normally apply the 'might is right' principle to cars tend to get the hell out of the way when you're 'tanking'* down the road towards them.

    *apologies for the pun.

The first thing the car driver should consider is "Is that tank one of ours?"

They've been talking for years about building one going underneath it. Right now we just have a very slow one that people love to crawl along at 5mph so they can stare at a pile of old rocks.

"That pile of old rocks were there before you, young man, and will be there after you"

With the possible exception of the Lille ring road (I ALWAYS get lost going round it) it's probably my least fav stretch of road.

Allegedly the crew were only made aware by everyone else waving them down. << doubtful about the last bit, I know tanks are loud but you would probably notice 1.5 tonnes of car hitting the tank you were in.
Having sat in a Chieftain (and a Sierra for that matter) I doubt if you would notice a Sierra hitting the side of it.

Generally they will self insure, not have a policy with an insurance company. for a really big fleet its cheaper to do it that way.

It depends more on the fleet owner and their ability to pay claims.
