I had the SM510R, it was a fantastic bike and no where near the service intervals described by many, but they were regular and expensive. If you can afford that or are good at spannering then go for it. It was the most enjoyable bike I have ever owned.

Plus, both those bikes are 15 years old, check spares prices/availability before going down that road

Whoops quick reply by you, I was hoping to add something more into that. I am an experienced spannerer so that doesn't worry me. Mind you a more recent KTM 640 with the new headlight design can be had for a few hundred cheaper:

Does it matter? It has a new engine so not a lot of miles on it. I would happily buy it.

I've got alternators on some of my bikes. I've got dynamos on others.

Because you know nothing yet about the new lump, history, engine numbers, etc. It's also a minor worry the first engine exploded that badly it was cheaper and easier to fit a new one?

Yes but surely engines do let go on Supermotos sometimes and if it chucks the conrod or similar catastrophic failure the only option is to replace it. Replacing an engine in a motorcycle is surely relatively easy to that of a car anyway? There are plenty of 640s in my price range that haven't had engine changes as well.

That is literally just a motocross bike with road tyres on, not even an MOT, completely impractical.
Eve if it had the road legal bits I have considered a two stroke but I think it might be just a little too impractical for my uses. I won't be commuting huge distances (normally just a 12 mile round trip) but I will be using the bike fairly regularly which would make mixing fuel a pain. I really think the sweet spot is a KTM 640 which is pretty much what I have decided on.

DRZs... That one is slightly tempting due to the fact it has both wheels but when I look at it compared to a 640 LC4 it just looks so boring. And I am starting to see a few 640 lc4s in my price range now the winter discount is taking effect. As much as you seem to want to converting me to DRZs is simply a lost cause

Proper supermotos are motorcross bikes with smaller wheels and road reg lights. Its why people are steering you towards more "Streetmotos".

You may not believe this but I and we are trying to help. We know a fair bit.

I don't want to convert you to them, but they're a better choice than the ktm. By the way, I own a ktm, 390 duke. So it's not like I'm against them, I've owned 12KTMs over the years.

If you took my advice you'd buy a husky 510smr or an Aprilia sxv550. But they're lie wrong bike for you.

By the way, a ktm 390 on 0% finance is by far a better choice than anything else you've seen. 120 per month. Bargain!

What he really wants is a road registered 500cc smoker, like a KX or CR. That's a proper supermoto
