Had first experience with off road riding today, great fun. It was an indoor track and we just used 125s. I was epically slow! Didn't help I strained my lower back the night before (trying to pick up a dropped adv 1190!*).

Start of the day I was getting lapped four times a session, got that down to one at the end.

Its weird as you can spot all the mistakes you are making, target fixation, tensing up etc. But then there are all specific 'off road' mistakes to throw into the mix too. Took two sessions just to figure out gear changes with those massive boots.

Something I want to try again for sure. Will probably only do it maybe 4 times a year, so not sure what the best approach is economically. Buying a bike is probably overkill.

    * Bloody side stand. The thing capitulated on a slight gradient as I took the top box off. Thought it was in first gear

I am looking for something like this (I think?)
Where was the experience thing, and who was it with?

125's are great bikes to learn on. I would definitely recommend getting out to some trails if you could, really helps you find your limits.

It was 200 quid for the day. That includes all kit and a variety of bikes (if they deem you safe enough to go above a 125). One chap had a go on a 300 or 350. Also includes lunch.

I think if the weather if good you go outside too. It was shocking weather so we just stayed indoors.

There are a variety of "tryout" experiences you can go to, for my money this is probably about the best: www.mxtryout.co.uk - it's on the Cambs/Suffolk border, but you could search for ones closer to you. Most are outdoors, simply because most MX tracks are outdoors. Don't go for an indoor one just because you might get rained on, there's so much more choice and larger, better tracks outdoors. The one I linked to costs 100 for a half day's riding (about 2 hrs) and gets you hire of a bike at a circuit, all riding gear and some tuition. A full day is 160 (4.5 hrs riding) but bear in mind MX is VERY physical and you'd have to be pretty bike fit to do a full 4.5 hours in (and out) of the saddle!

If you're after a gentler experience check out www.trailworld.co.uk who specialise in green laning, and will again supply bike and riding gear for a day exploring the country's green lanes - legal roads that can be anything from gravel tracks to forest paths, swamps or moorlands.

When I bought my Husqvarna the shop gave me a free bungy cord to attach to the sidestand and front wheel. Worked a treat.

I cut the little bit that makes it spring back off the end of the pivot bolt, it was fine once I'd done that.

From memory the one on my 510 unscrewed, that also worked.
