    Weather maybe?

    wrong oil at best

Head gasket at worst. You might have thought HG failure remained in a 2 decade old past. Not so....

Oil is as per spec. 10/30 full synthetic c2/c3.

Coolant and oil uncontaminated. At last service they couldn't find a leak.

Thing is it does this now and again, and then settles down. Bloody fickle thing

You expect water in the oil if it was HGF, if it's burning oil I'd say turbo seals.

Ah, I thought somewhere it was mentioned it was the THP engine.

I typed 'erratic oil use' into Google yesterday morning and first result was a Mini forum!! Must be that high class German engineering Funnily enough I was walking past a cooper in the traffic the other day and it sounded as rattly as the C4 so maybe it's fine!

Very tenuous link, but the motor in the original BMW petrol Mini's (the One/Cooper and Supercharged in the Cooper S) was a Chrysler Tritec engine made in Brazil, not a lot to do with BMW at all.

Just checked and it's worse! Mine has the later Prince engine which was a Pug/CitroŽn engine used by bmw in the Mini and later 116/118s apparently. So its very French. It's probably hot and wants to go on strike.

Could be worse, could be the BMW N47 Diesel as found in the 118, etc.. google that and you'd never ever consider a BMW ever.

It's much better actually. PAS units are likely to still be running long after everything else has corroded away. None of the sensors will work though. the alternator won't charge & the rev counter will be random

I simply cannot grasp how that can happen.

Me neither but it does and judging from Taipan's comment and some posts in a mini forum I'm not alone. It goes against my (admittedly limited ) understanding of engines. Gonna leave it now as I'll stress myself out otherwise. I spoke to the Mrs about it and she said I'm not replacing unless it's basically dead and it's not dead...yet!

On and more positive note my KTM seems to have stopped using oil
