    Default Now thinking of a V50

    I know, I know......

    After a year or so with the CB400 Super Four and getting its ergonomics etc to my requirements, as well as sorting out an irritating cutting out problem it's a lovely bike and does everything very well.

    But......

    I can't really get on with that engine howling away at stratospheric revs underneath me. I think this was mentioned to me at some stage. It does pull quite well sub-7K but that seems not to be using it properly.

    So I've decided its residence chez Soady is to be limited and will be putting it up for sale shortly. Its replacement? Well, I had a V50 Guzzi for a couple of years back in the 80s and really liked it. So I think that will be my next direction - similar size to the Honda, much lighter, and most importantly peak revs at 8K or so.

    Any recent V50 owners around?

    I have one of the ex-Dutch Nato ones. I like it but wouldn't recommend them to normal people. they're not the same as a standard V50 with variations to suit the military, eg I believe the valves are smaller so it's top end speed is less. The really, really good thing is it has the optional extra kickstart.

    Thanks Janet. Not sure why a kickstart is a really good thing......

    I do seem to remember that the starter motor on mine wouldn't work when the engine was hot - probably just an expansion problem somewhere. In those days my bikes were daily transport so I didn't spend months rebuilding them - as long as they went they stayed on the road. I'm so much more pernickety these days.

    I love your eclectic collection of bikes. Probably not enough to actually want to own any of them, but I'm glad there are people like you who do

    I had one as my first 'big' bike (it was my mum's, she still has it, I plan to recommission it eventually.....), actually a very pleasant bike to ride, not especially fast, but would (IIRC) get over a ton (indicated).

    I went up a size on the main jet and put K&N filters and Lanfranconi race pipes on it - the only difference was that the 'power band' shifted about 1000 revs higher up the rev range (and it sounded awesome!). I also fitted a Le Mans 1 fairing to it at one stage. (confused a lot of people. )

    Didn't they do the 'Monza' with that as standard?

    Mine had engine bars and a touring screen, like a mini-California

    No the Monza had a square nose fairing, think Le Mans v2.

    Apart from it starting the engine if the electric foot isn't working for some reason, I also use kick-starts when doing maintenance on bikes as it's a slow and easy way to turn over the engine. I'm sure other methods are available.

    Yes, like when a mate kicked over his Triumph while a friend was checking the chain tension . . . scrunch of sprocket/fingertip/chain interface. Shockingly, he did the same a while later when someone else had just taken his finger tip away from the contact points - that would have had his fingertip off!

    I generally put it in top gear & use the back wheel as it's then easy to nudge backwards and forwards. Precision with a kickstart is not easily achieved.....

    I must say that does seem very light.

    If your mum's interested in moving hers on (as you may never get around to recommissioning).......

    It's Italian - it'll get lighter as it gets older. Well, mine did as paint flaked off and rust developd, and electrics corroded away . . .

    As 150 Kg is the manufacturer's figure, and as anything I find will be at least 30 years old, it may even have negative weight.......

    At least the electrics on the V50 I had were better than those on the 2 MZs I endured round about the same time.
