It really isn't as good as people think it is. I know, and my opinion is more right than everyone else's .

Bloke at work today, nice chap, said LOTR is for kids and Game of Thrones is for adults.

It really depends if you're into that sort of fantasy. I started pretty sceptical (and I still think it's pretty cheesy) but it's well woven and in fact you need to pay attention from the beginning as things that happen later seem related to events you may not have picked up at the time in the early episodes. Like why Jon Arryn's squire was made up to knight in such a hurry and whether the Mountain ever misses...

Still entertaining hokum- if you disregard the odd timeline in the latest episode(actually the whole premise of their reasons for being beyond the wall at all).

the odd little details are quite intriguing though, like the eyes on Jon snows sword hilt changing as he miraculously emerges from the icy water.

Some things are a bit too pat. Like how Gendry gets to the wall, sends a raven to Dragonstone and straight away there are 3 dragons providing close air support in less than a day. How Uncle Benjen suddenly turns up with a horse in the nick of time. How killing one Walker kills all but one necessary captive wight. Aside from these rather clumsy plot points I thought this episode was a bit exposition-heavy with an unlikely buddy thing going on between Tormund and the Hound, though the tension between Arya and Sansa was well done. The TV series has become noticeably more formulaic since it overtook the books, but it's winding up to one helluva climax, no doubt to be delivered in Kings Landing next week.

The time sequences are very odd I agree, I wonder how much of that is actually due to trying to hard to wrap up all the plot threads in the short storytelling time left to the series

Yeah they're doing it no favours trying to cram it all into 7 shows. I suppose it does make for hard hitting action-packed episodes but it also makes for clunky exposition, lack of character development and implausible timelines.

How many more seasons would we need if they followed a timeline like the earlier episodes?

It took a whole season for Brieene to take Jamie home, a whole season for the hound to take Arya to the Vale. If they followed that format, next week's final would be John turning up at Dragonstone for the first time.

It's a show about dragons, magic walls, pixies, witches, giant wolves and the undead. I can forgive them playing fast and loose with the timeline.

Speaking of giant wolves, when did we last see Ghost?

Last night's seemed a bit like a re-run of Battle of the Bastards to me.

And I'm getting confused as to who's father fought with who in which battle and who was sent where to do what. If only every character could do a cheeky aside to the camera giving a 2 minute summary so far whenever they enter stage right.

Yes and no, the plot with lots of travel doesn't help and without the benefit of motor vehicles the distances we're talking about should take days or weeks. The current teleportation business is just silly. But delays in travel would make it more plausible, and one thing the series has done well in the past is to weave a plausible world, albeit one based on tits and dragons. Three more episodes to bring it up to the size of previous series would help reduce the incidence of painful deus ex machina plot lines.

And as for direwolves, we saw Nymeria didn't we?
