How much wind up are we talking about here? Less than a quarter turn? More than one complete turn?

It doesn't really help sort it, it just makes it more visible.

Less than a quarter turn in my experience but it depends on individual tyre sizes. On long road runs the lads would bump them onto kerb stones or just run on the verge for a bit to allow the wheels to slip a bit. Cross country driving wind up was not an issue.

And some more updates, wish I had his time, space, enthusiasm, money. My ex left when I started building Technic Lego, she would have gone a lot sooner if I realised all I needed was an old truck!!

Some guys near me have got their Saracen running, but it only goes forward. I know it has a pre-select tranny, but is there some trick to getting it to go backwards?

THIS ^^ suggests that its a five speed forward and reverse preselector box so it will have a lever somewhere to put it into reverse and there will be five speed in reverse too bit like the austin champ.
