Had Spanish politicians been committed to democracy they would have at least given the people the chance to have a referendum on whether or not to have a poll on separation. With Franco's tomb and monument still in situ that in itself gives a message to what some of the Spanish people are like. Then there's Lorca.

I'm watching this with interest. Their democracy is only young, there will be many in Spain who remember the days of military dictatorship. And there seems to be a feeling that this is a democratic action being taken, but that the government are being undemocratic and dictatorial in attempting to prevent it. And of course their police forces have some paramilitary trappings (as to most these days tbf). What the absolute detail is of course could well be something else, but it does seem to be something the Catalans really believe in - enough to fight for perhaps?

I hope no one gets hurt.

People are still trying to vote and police are smashing their way into buildings, could get interesting.

It's hard to see the benefit of trying to stop a referendum, by force.

Makes me think the British government did something right a few years back.

Well it’s certainly in the press but the locals seem to have done a job of hiding it pretty well. Tourism appears ongoing, I saw a poll booth queue with people waiting in an orderly line. Seen lots of police in general both local and national but have not seen a single tractor

I took it to be a reference to 2014.

Judging by the social media posts it's getting a little bit ugly - as expected. Police have fired baton rounds and they're storming some of the polling stations.

I feel for the police. Their political masters have told them that this must be stopped, but the Catalans are insisting on continuing, so it is in effect a large scale civil disobedience. I can't help but think that the Spanish government should have not sent the police in and simply challenged the referendum in court. Maybe they don't think that they would win? In which case sending the police in becomes quite sinister. And the days of their dictatorship are still well within living memory.

Agreed. Sending in the police is a tactical mistake which will only stiffen the resolve of the secessionists.

Especially if the list of casualties continues to grow. Which, unfortunately, it looks likely to.

A regime showing how tough it is won't see things that way.

I wonder if the Catalans would want to be in the EU . . .

Well according to Spanish rhetoric concerning the Scots (based on deterring the Basques), a newly independent nation would have to apply to join.

    IIRC that is.

I'd expect rSpain to force them to apply to join the EU.
