A bit of a comedy rolling out in Catalonia. They've called a referendum on independence, the Spanish govt. confiscates all the ballot boxes. Midnight raids to find illegal voting slips. Blockades as mayors get arrested for supporting it. Spanish govt. nicking the region's money back. A 15 year-old boy shot dead for drawing a cross in the middle box of a game of noughts and crosses (ok, I made that one up).

Makes the Scottish referendum look almost civilised.

I've been following it. It's a complete mess and looks likely to backfire big time.

Spanish authorities try to shutter Catalan referendum websites

They plan to curtail Catalan referendum information from spreading online.

The fight between the Catalan independence movement and Spanish authorities over an independence vote is expanding into the online world.

This week, an organization managing how users find websites with the .cat extension was raided by the Civil Guard, a Spanish police force, according to the organization’s chief executive officer and the Spanish interior ministry.
This is not going to end well,

Wonder what HMG would do if the Scots decided to hold an unofficial referendum and declared independence on the basis of that. Reckon they'd stand by or send in the troops?

I know there isn't the appetite for it right now but the Scots aren't happy about Brexit and if (as in all probability it will) the final deal turns out to be a right stinker you can be sure the subject will become a very hot topic.

Correction: Some Scots aren't happy about Brexit.

And the majority of Scots don't want another independence referendum. Nor do they want independence, but the nationalists seem hell bent on having another referendum and are even considering UDI according to some sources. They aren't done with yet that's for sure.

Obviously. There was not a 100% vote for remain. It was 62%, or nearly 2 to 1. But given that 52% is a historic landslide mandate in some people's eyes I think it's fair to say Scotland as a whole is not happy about Brexit.

    That's why I said

Recent poll said the Scots were opposed to a second referendum at this time by 53/47. Again, not quite a landslide, and let's see how that goes when the Brexit terms are known.

    Kicking off now.

    http://www.politico.eu/article/catal...-a-revolution/

The Spanish government has launched an all-out assault on Catalan efforts to hold a referendum on independence.

In the latest development, Spanish authorities seem determined to physically prevent Catalans from casting a ballot on Sunday — setting the stage for a high-voltage climax to one of the gravest political crises the country has faced in the past four decades.
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...-battle-lines/

A column of tractors has rolled into the streets of Barcelona as hundreds of farmers from Catalonia show their support for Sunday’s planned referendum on independence.

An estimated 700 tractors met the call of a small farmers’ union to drive their heavy vehicles into Catalonia’s capital, where they could be used to barricade polling stations against police forces acting on court orders to prevent the referendum from taking place.

“We ask for all the tractors in the land to be parked in the vicinity of polling stations without hindering traffic or the carrying out of the vote […] but ready to move against any potential sabotage of the ballot”, the farmers’ union Assemblea Pagesa said.

It was a historic mandate, just not a landslide one, you added that bit yourself.
