    Yes it'll be fine as long as you don't short to the frame while bridging the contacts!!

    As Morti says, just be careful not to short the +ve terminal to the frame.

    Alternatively, you could use this opportunity to practice your bump starts!

    Could easily be the starter switch/button or solenoid. Fairly easy to isolate that. My money would be a loose terminal from the insertion of the new starter.

    ER-5s are a bit of a parts bin special and the kill switch is a bit fragile; worth inspecting/cleaning the kill and starter switch, ignition fuse and starter motor/housing.
