Default anyone on here familiar with a briggs & stratton 11hp motor?

the mower has a vertical crank 11hp briggs motor with a serious oil leak.
meant to fix it over the winter but mower was stuffed in the back of the garage and other things took over.
looks like it could be base gasket (if it has one) area but cant actually see as too many bits of mower in the way.
uses 1/2l of oil to mow 3/4 acre.
    any ideas or common issues.

Find the engine number and Download the manual or parts list.
There is also a repair manual online which covers OHV and
side valve motors, I have it somewhere .
11HP is quite big , is it a Ride on type mower.

I know about the small side valve ones, but 11hp is big for a mower

I'm glad you said that. I assumed that there was a decimal point missing.

More than likely the crank seal.
It's probably the same as a 4HP so unbolt and lift off the engine. Turn upside down. Undo the crankcase. Pull it off over the crank shaft. Prise out old seal. Tap in new.

32" cut ride on. 11hp a bit much for a Suffolk punch

Sounds reasonable but how come such a serious failure there? I'd at least make sure that replacement seals are upgraded & look for what the hell might have bust the originals.

36" Westwood type body from 1980's here. Was offered with B&S lump, but ours has the kawaski one. I've never so much as touched the engine at all. Just changed the oil & it uses none. Your better long term bet (seeing as regardless the B&S has to come out) might well be to replace with Jap equiv.
