But what's in it for the factory to do that?

Do the rules even allow more than 2 factory bikes plus 2 satellite bikes?

I think they do. Look at Ducati. Full fat 2018 bike in Pramac for Petrucci. Crutchlow on a "factory" bike in his team.... It is doable if they want to keep him in the game and racing on something worth racing on.

He seems to have announced his retirement today, I post the link if I can find it again.

    Just conjecture. Nothing official yet.

    2012: MotoGP, 7 wins, 2nd in championship
Best rider never to win the premier title, and how unlucky was he that year?

Good decision I think, and hope he'll be around the paddock in another capacity. I've always rated him even when the dimbulbs were talking about "Pedrobot". True greatness isn't about clowning for the cameras

It's a real shame he never won a championship, but given the long list of injuries he's had i don't blame him.

The Pedrobot thing was about his behaviour when he was personally managed by Puig. And he was a proper miserable little git then. After changing personal representation he turned into someone very, very likeable, approachable and downright nice to be around. We bonded over windsurfing and paddleboarding - stuff that I had no idea that he did until he actually started to talk to people. A truly nice guy and great racer.

Gutted. Would have loved to see him on the Yamaha.
Paddock will be a poorer place without him.

Yeah, you mentioned you'd had a nice chat with him. All I'm saying is people aren't miserable little gits who turn into nice blokes overnight. It's superficial judgements like that - that most people make in the basis of nothing more than a televised parc ferme interview - that do our sport no favours.
