    Question Password generator / authenticator / management

    Just received a sextortion email wanting 3,500 from me otherwise they'll send compromising videos of me yadda, yadda, yadda. Normally I would just delete the email and forget about it, however, it contained a string of characters not a million miles away from my password for various accounts.

    Therefore, I am looking at changing all of my passwords, the first being my own domain email address which threw up the options of using their generator and cPanelID to 'reduce the number of passwords I need to remember'.

    What is the perceived wisdom here?

    AFAIK the latest thoughts are massively long randomly generated passwords managed by something along the lines of LastPass (there's several, IIRC LastPass is no longer the best). Therefore you only need to remember 1 password - that for the manager, and obviously trust the manager.

    Different random passwords are recommended for every site and of course you won't remember them all so you'll need a password wallet.

    I was hesitant to do this as the one I use works well enough but there may be much better ones out there that don't charge extra to sync between devices, I use Dashlane.

    The one I have been using for years and rate very highly is KeePass. You can get it to work across all the platforms. I use it on both Linux and IOS. Also works on Windows. No need to be on wifi of anything else to use it.

    It will generate passwords for you. I like to keep a copy of the files on a USB stick for enhanced privacy.

    When I needed to change my password, I wanted to change it to 'My Cock'.

    Sadly, I was told my password isn't long enough.

    for the last 10+ years I have kept a txt file on my computer which has all my passwords in
    example-
    www.therevcounter.com
    user=Eclipse
    pw=yeahright
    (to generate the passwords for each website i just mash random keys)

    I have backups on a flash pen and external hd.
    it's not ideal as i dont have access to them when I go out
    so i'd like something like a wallet thing too with just one pw
    to remember that works on android too.

    I have a simple formula based on third letter of the website name, last letter and total number of letters.

    It's foolproof as only I know the formula. I never bother to remember any passwords. Just enter on the fly.

    For anyone unconvinced about the need for different passwords on every site this is worth a read.

    Send your file to me, I'll keep it safe and you can phone me when you're out and about and using your Android phone.

    I use keepass2 on my Linux computer, it's available in Synaptic package manager, and my Android phone (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...eepass2android). I think you can keep the database in the cloud but I keep mine on the computer and copy it to the phone whenever I add a new login, which isn't very often. It works for me.

    Keepass website.

    How many times have you tried looking up a twenty random character password in a notebook and copying it to a keyboard, especially on a mobile phone? It soon gets tedious and is why most people don't do that.
