Default Auto darkening welding helmet glass

Does the glass lose it darkness on the bedpost overnight over time?

I've a cheap Clarke one, came with the welder, and the lens doesn't make the weld pool dim enough to look at. I don't remember it being as bad as this. I can replace the glass but is it worth it, should I just lump out for a better helmet? I don't really do enough welding to justify it but I really don't want to damage my sight or get arc eye.

The internal batteries die. One of mine went that way. I pulled it apart ans soldered in a set of flying lead so I could fit a set AAA batteries. It's worked fine since then. However, a replacement auto mask starts at about 35 nowdays, and is well worth it.

Thanks, I'll buy a new one. If I can't bodge the old one
