Erm, as it says in the title really. I'm short on money but long on time currently - any suggestions?

    Youtube.

Get a decent basic toolkit and start by doing simple stuff. Then tackle harder/longer things as your confidence grows.

I did a motorcycle maintenance evening class at Merton College, but that was 10+ years ago. I thought it was very good, would be worth checking if they still do similar.

Buy a shonker, get it running and keep it running.

The best way really is just get hands on..

If you own a bike, get a Haines manual,
Start with the basics, which is a routine service and road worthiness check.
Only basic tools are needed for this.

EVERYTHING. is covered with your manual, and also includes pictures.

Once you have a little bit of confidence, remove your tank/air filter housing and take a look what's underneath. This should give access to carbs, coils etc, obviously model/make differences occur.

Fuel injected models require more advanced tools/diagnostic equipment.

Just take your time, and get your hands dirty, and be proud knowing you serviced your own motorcycle, whilst saving money.

If learning by DIY, especially if you rely on the bike for daily transport, be sure you know how to get it back together before taking it apart.
