    Default Car hire excess insurance

    Anyone taken it out?

I haven't before as for example typically when hiring a car for holiday its about E200 for the car and to get full excess cover is like E300 on top. However last year I ran over a dog as I was leaving the airport and scared the crap outta me thinking I'd get lumbered with a big bill (luckily no damage..well to the car...the dog on the other hand )

Noticed you can now get covered for this by places like below for about 40 notes. Seems a good idea.

My CC provides excess cover for any hire car, but not vans, so I always take it out, especially as van excess seems to be 2k or so.

Interesting. How does one find out if I have this?

Amex provide a pack with the list of free* benefits.

*not free, as the card has a 450 or something annual fee.
It's still worth that to me for the 150 plus airline lounge visits our family has, the travel insurance and car hire benefits though.

Money Saving Expert think it's a good idea to get the excess insurance separately. If I was doing it I'd make a point of videoing the car before driving it away, preferably with the hire company rep in view to document any existing marks and scratches etc.

I pay around 60 annually to get worldwide excess cover. It saves me a small fortune in hire fees

Well worth it in my opinion.

Ive used insurance4carhire for over ten years and > 50 hires. Had cause to claim 3 times (twice for windscreen damage, one for a flat), painless claims process. About 40e PA iirc.

Normal car hire damage waiver excess insurance at the desk is about 7e per day ffs, so quids in

Cool I shall book some tomorrow. I thought it was a good idea esp as the one time I did full cover (5 lads on a weekend) we got a football through the windscreen!! Never done it in Spain before as cover is so expensive and I didn't realise till today you can get separate cover.

    Ta peeps
