No.2 son is about to head for 10 months to China.
I understand his Gmail account won't work out there, but most people contact him through that.
Does anyone know what's best to get around it?
I presume a straight VPN to our house won't be allowed?

Oh, and does anyone have mobile SIM recommendations while he's out there?

    Thanks!

Would it be possible for him to make a Chinese email account then setup gmail's email forwarding so all emails to his gmail account get sent to his new one in China ?

When Foal went out for a couple of weeks, the advice was to sign up to Weebo (?), IIRC a WhatsApp style thing*

Gmail is hit and miss in china, and my dad's account gets hacked (he will be in a meeting in Xiamen, and his business partner in London will receive emails from 'him' asking to wire money to a chinese account as an emergency'. Weird. Facebook sometimes works on some devices.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket and pay for a lifetime subscription to one VPN as suddenly they can stop working in China and you then have to find another one that will work.

I have my own domain name. I redirect my preferred email address to my gmail account. When I go to China I redirect it to my Yahoo mail account.

    E.g. If I had the domain name lout.org.uk I would redirect saga@lout.org.uk to saga.lout@gmail.com or to saga_lout@yahoo.co.uk.

I've got a friend who used expressvpn on a trip to china last month - they said it worked a treat.

be very aware that weibo will be heavily monitored. Seriously no jokes about communism else he'll end up being strip searched by bubba.
