We had a proper big American style Maytag side-by-side with water and ice plumbed in.
It was very expensive, very well built, but not reliable and was far from economical.

We replaced it a few years ago with a large John Lewis larder fridge and a small under counter freezer, though we also have 3 very large chest freezers in an outhouse - 1 pork, 1 lamb, 1 other.
I keep some shop bagged ice in the small freezer plus some trays but we don't do very much in the way of G&Ts etc.

I had a Daewoo one at the old place, all plumbed in for ice and water and it was brill...... sold it to the buyer for a pittance as the new place moved into would have been awkward to fit plus it was just me and missus instead of us and 2 teenage sons so food demand dropped massively

Do you mean American style or actually big real American. If the latter then Sub-Zero.

Yiu can get decent side by side units where the fridge and freezer are separate components. Some you can even link together. Cost wise they work out better than some american type units, I'm looking and apparently they are more efficient than a single unit since the fridge does just fridge and freezer does just freezer rather than one unit trying to do both i.e. if you dont use the fridge much but use the freezer more you can adjust them separately so there is no compromise.

I have seen these and they do look nice if you get the right design, i will consider them as well but the overall look of the american style one's can be a bit of a wow factor in any kitchen and mine will be designed from the ground up so i can fit whatever i want in.
