According to the description on Youtube:
"The hand crank starter, is the recommended way of starting a Tiger in cold weather conditions, it also has an electric starter. The hand crank turns a heavy flywheel at the rear of the engine, when it reaches a high rotation speed, a pin is pushed or pulled, this connects the spinning flywheel to the crank shaft, which spins up the Pistons thus starting the engine."

There must have been times when Jerry didn’t fancy getting out of the tank, to start it up.

Any fule no that. Very similar to the inertia starter on lots of aircraft.
And yes , have owned lots of vehicles with starting handles from 53 ford pop to 2cvs...and had to start them thus.

Yes, my first car a red moggy van. Hade to unscrew the front number plate to do it so it was easier to park facing down hill and push start it sometimes.

Did you not have technology to make a hole in the plate?

Considering the average age of this forum, I imagine there's a few here that require starting by hand.

You know what they say - sex is great, but you can't beat the real thing.
