Missus uses a Chromebook. It's basically an iPad with a keyboard which uses the moisture from clouds to float photos and piece of paper up into the sky where pixies look after it or something.

She likes it. And she like G Mail and other applications as it links all her work stuff together.

I had an ASUS C100 IIRC. Light and it booted quickly. IME a Chromebook is fine as long as you have connectivity and don't mind your files being on someone else's computer.

I frequently don't have the former and actively distrust the latter, especially when the someone else is Google.

The basic difference between them is that the laptop stores data on storage integrated into the laptop whereas the Chromebook stores data in a remote site ("cloud") which can only be accessed using the internet. So you can use the laptop without having to be connected to the internet but you can only use the Chromebook when connected to the internet. With the laptop you can also store data in the "cloud" if you are connected to the internet.

The laptop will typically run Microsoft Windows and the Chromebook runs Chrome OS, so if you want to run any Windows applications you'll need to run a laptop with Microsoft Windows installed on it.

Not quite as simple as that, but that's it in a nutshell.

A friend fell in to that trap and bought one not realising you can't run windows programs / software on it.

I need a windows machine (spit, spit) for work, what does the hive mind think of surfaces?

I used one of the first ones, and it was cack, but I hear they have improved?

I've got a Surface Pro 4 and think it's pretty good. The screen is very good and it runs all I want easily, including CAD. It chuggs a bit when I'm manipulating large models though.

I don't use it for games at all.

    But...

The first was replaced under warranty as it overheated during high video usage. The replacement loses about 7% of its battery charge overnight despite turning everything off recommended by various forums on the net. I am not alone with this problem. It doesn't bother me though as I don't need to use it on battery much.

I've been using a Chromebook for the past 2 or 3 years. I like it. 99% of what I do is on the 'web, so it doesn't bother me that there are software limitations, especially since we also have a couple of Windows machines in the house anyway. Fast boot-up, virus-resistant, doesn't slow over time due to patches/updates, etc. Apple-like (I suspect - not owned one) experience, for a quarter of the price.

I'd recommend an HD screen and 4GB RAM. We've just ordered one of these:
