I've got a 2016 Focus estate with a 1.5 econotec diesel. It's not exciting but it averages at 60.8mpg over the last 80k miles.

The wife had that shape Passat brand new as a company car, in 2.0 110bhp trim. It drove like a boat.

The Mundano 1.6 dev that replaced it was marginally slower, but drove like a proper car, rather than a passenger ferry.

A mate of mine had a 2011 BMW 320D as a company car. It went like shit off a shovel and averaged 55mpg but as Taipan said up there the days of the diesel are numbered I think.

If I were you I'd get another Civic

    I think that's the way I'm heading.
Whilst the fuel consumption of the Kia's and other small cars suggested here is tempting, the civic gave me 75,000 trouble free miles (except for the air con packing in) in 3 years, never returned less than 50mpg, and the simple things like not having to get under the car to do an oil n filter change make it a hard car to beat for my simple needs.

Although I am looking at the wee 1.4 v-tec version at the most.

I've owned a couple of Passats (and driven more). Every one has driven like a boat. The best of them was all turn in and then just masses of understeer. Which was interesting.

I did briefly consider buying one of the daft 4WD W10 models they did as I was offered one at a very attractive price. But then I had a good hard word with myself.

As methods of moving lots of stuff from A to B they're alright (although a Volvo is almost always better) as a car they're woeful.

My son-in-law has just bought one and he's very happy with it. He's not the quickest of drivers mind, not by a long way.

I remember Weeksy bought a Kia and said it was horrible on the motorway. Although TBH he bought a petrol Civic and hated that too.

I suspect my next car will be a diesel. I'd be amazed if they hit the Euro 6 ones as they're quite clean. They also have a way nicer power delivery than anything except huge petrol engines IMO.

That was the Mini wannabe 'Soul'.

My retired old codger parents have a Cee'd, I had to drive it the other day and was pleasantly surprised. It was shit, but nowhere near as shit as I was expecting... and I drove it at least three times faster than my old man does.

I should probably add that her car is now a current model Passat and it's a surprisingly nice car. It's the 150bhp 2l derv, but feels a lot quicker, the handling is so so still (but a epoch better than the old one) and it's got a G-Meter which makes up for all it's flaws.
